If you haven't read Issac Asimov's Robot series, I recommend it. He put a LOT of thought into some very thorny issues arising from scientific progression, and then wrote stories exploring those issues. His "Three Rules", and the ramifications and emergent behavior resulting from them, are a recurring theme. The Will Smith movie barely scratched the surface.
