Little Sahara flag requirements?

Does anyone know the regulations regarding flags at Little Sahara? I remember back in the day only quads and buggies were required to have them but I know that motorcycles need them too now. Last time I was down there I seem to recall seeing a sign stating all non street licenced vehicles must have a flag beyond this point. So is that the rule? Not needed for street licenced trucks/jeeps/bikes, etc? Thanks.

From the BLM's page on Little Sahara:

"For safety’s sake, Federal and State regulations require the use of whip flags within recreation area."

I've always understood it to be a requirement for ALL vehicles to have a flag. They sell them for a few bucks at the visitors center.

My dual sport dirt bike. I don't mind running a flag, it is the mointing options I don't like. I won't be any safer with a flag because with it mounted on my swing arm the top of the flag is about even with the top of my helmet.

I have used a air quick connect for my flags on my four wheelers, they work pretty good you just use something strong to glue the flag in (like jb weld or epoxy).

A flag is a requirement for a bike at Little Sahara. If you are caught without one, they will ticket you. I know they're a pain, but buying a flag and dealing with it on your motorcycle is cheaper & less hassle than getting a ticket.

I am not arguing the pros and cons of flag usage here, simply trying to know the law so I can obey it. I have searched the internet and haven't found anything more concise than what scoutabout posted. That conflicts with the sign I saw down there in Jan.

The light just went on, I should call them! Sometimes in this day and age of information available on the internet I forget about talking to an old fashioned person! :D I will post up their answer.

The law is that you must have a flag.

I wasn't saying it's a good idea to run a flag, I'm talking from experience riding at Little Sahara. I've been down there w/o a flag and was ticketed. I didn't frequent the dunes & didn't realize that it was a requirement. Now I know better.

I bought a bracket that goes on the axle of my motorcycle and then has a quick release from there. The bad thing was the pole just plain getting in the way. I drilled a small hole on my fender where I could run a zip tie loosely around the flag and through the hole in my fender. The hole is on the outside edge of my fender and this has really kept the flag from driving me nuts.

The Utah BLM has a decent website:

http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en.html

The Forest Service has one too:

http://www.fs.fed.us/

And you're absolutely right, sometimes a quick phone call is the best way to find an answer. Numbers are available on the sites above. Have a good time.

The quick-disconnect idea is a good one, thanks for sharing that.

Yup, anything motorized has to have a flag. The good news is that you can get a flag for your bike that says "sand princess", like Me! :greg:

Vehicles can get away with a flag tied to a CB antenna or radio antenna assuming its over the minimum height restriction, it does not have to be a separate flag.

Von can vouch for our last visit to the dunes several weeks ago, not only did the LEO stop by and say hello, but he and a Sherriff were cruising around there all day long... even saw a 4-wheeler heading out on a flatbed after an impound. Have your flags, your bikes registered and helmets for those under 18 (and everyone for that matter).

Make sure you call down to the visitors center if your planning on buying a flag there, they didn't have them this last time we were there, thankfully we had all bought them ahead of time and even had a spare for the guy that didn't.

i know its a good idea to have them on bikes but every time we had them on we would end up breaking them off

X2 for me,just dont break it when swinging your leg over the seat.

Also if you break it out on the dunes,go back and get it, it will save you a ticket on the way back to camp. trust me i know.......
