our company trucks have a gps tracking device in them and they work off of cell service which is ok in most states and provides alot of info back to our office such as time at location, when the vehicle is turned on and just idling, when its moving and such.. nice for the boss but for a thief its easy to disable... a simple look under the dash at the fuse box and they see the wires and can disconnect them... or as our electricians sometimes do... they hit the wires with their big feet and pull them off.. one other things is that if they pull this vehicle into a metal garage the signal becomes too weak to actually track the vehicle...

one other thing about this service is that there is this antenna mounted up on the roof that is a dead give away that there is a tracking device in the vehicle.

To me the best system would be one that is hidden very well and not advertised in the windows of the vehicle and that would kill the engine upon activation by the monitoring company. Onstar works like this and has many other features that make it worth the money however its only mounted on chevy vehicles so its out of the question for me...

so I would love to hear other systems that work....

The ones that the trucking companies use are large. The install location and wires would be completely based on the installer. The units can be hidden very well now. Nothing is external of the vehicle. Everything is inside and extremely well hidden. I don't think anyone would ever find mine. Although a metal building can reduce the coverage, only one time have I ever noticed this issue. A lot of companies store their cars in warehouse type places with very little issues now.

I have remote shutdown on my truck. The gps is tied into the alarm and if the alarm goes off it will send me a txt msg. I keep a geofence around my boat in storage, if it moves it will send me a txt msg as well.

None of the systems are perfect, but when setup in layers it can be pretty well protected. I would challenge someone to try and steal mine now. I will even give them the key. The nice thing is all the systems work seamlessly together so anyone can drive the vehicle and not have to know any tricks to do it. TThey maybe able to take it on a tow truck, but they better be quick stripping it or I will be right behind them.

One of the company trucks was totaled in a accident. The insurance company would not give up any information about the location of the vehicle and the tow yard seem to not be able to find it. They did not know we had tracking on it. We could see every time they moved it. It was strange to see the truck go between 3 seperate yards.

Rec'd this email from our LOJACK liason:

Hello Sue,

Well we finally have a LoJack installer living in Salt Lake City – taking care of the PD’s, dealerships and LoJack installations. If you or any of your crew want to get LoJack installed under my “Friends and Family” Discount, just let me know. Please be sure to tell them they need to indicate to me they were referred by YOU in order to be eligible for the discount.

I've included the form (attached). You can print it out and pass them around. Just have them fax it back to me. It's basically half price of the suggested dealership price ($695.00). My discount is $350.00 installed with warranty and no monthly fees. Again, be sure they indicate YOU as the referral.

Thanks! Stay safe!

West Valley Police Track Stolen Subaru to Residential Garage – 65 Minutes

Vehicle: 2004 Subaru Impreza, White

Activation: West Valley City PD, Utah 9/9/10 10:50 A.M.

Recovery: West Valley PD, Utah 9/9/10 11:55 A.M.

Dealership: Bob Baker Chevrolet, El Cajon, CA.

Sometime during the overnight hours of September 8, 2010 the 2004 Subaru Impreza was stolen from a family owned and operated Used Car Dealership in West Valley City Utah. The next morning the owners’ discovered the Subaru along with two other vehicles stolen and immediately contacted the West Valley Police Department; where a reported was taken under case# 10I038669.

After verifying the thefts, the West Valley Police Department entered the stolen Subaru into the Utah “Stolen Vehicle System” which automatically activated the hidden LoJack transponder at 10:50 A.M.

At about 11:10 A.M., Officers’ with the West Valley City Police picked up the silent LoJack signal of the Subaru with their LoJack equipped patrol cars and began a series of tracks. Within minutes of being activated, police located the Subaru hidden inside a residential garage in West Valley City. Police contacted the homeowner, who agreed to cooperate and the vehicle was recovered. The suspect’s identities are known to police and the investigation continues.

The Car Dealership was completely surprised how fast the vehicle was found, and had no idea the vehicle’s first owner decided to buy a LoJack system for the car back in 2006.

The LoJack unit was installed 9/26/2006 by Bob Baker Chevrolet of El Cajon, CA.
