Looks like I might have a new pet

Not really sure what to do with him, his mother was captured in a live trap a few days ago and relocated to another location, a coworker found him in the shop this morning. I like raccoons, don't really consider them varmints, so releasing him out in the wild or shooting him really isn't an option. He's small enough he needs bottle fed so it looks like I'll be taking care of him for a while. F & G nor Animal Control will take him, nor will Hogle Zoo (they used to have a raccoon pen).

I doubt it, but I'm only keeping him as long as it takes to find a good place for him, or until he's old enough to be set free.

Just did some quick reading and you are required to have a permit to keep one as a pet. Not that that would stop me. ;) They can be mean and carry a number of diseases, but I'm sure that's not so much of a risk with one of such a young age. Guess I might try giving Div of Wildlife Resources a call.

At the bottom of the page it says it is illigal to keep most wild animals in Utah. I don't know about racoons though. I think they are cute but have heard they are the biggest pest in the world and that you don't want them anywhere near your house.

They can be domesticated from a young age, however. My sister's ex-bf had one as pet. They take a lot of patience as they are mischievious but it can be done.

Yeah, you're suposed to have a permit but that shouldn't be hard for a person with your connections to get.

Ryan's dad has one for a pet, it's domesticated and more civil than a dog.

I'm on my way over.

If you find you or your family cannot care for him, our new house s far enough from the city that myself and my wife can take him in as a family pet. I had one when I lived in WY and it was the best pet I have ever had.

once he is off the bottle make sure you keep a little water driping somewhere for it to wash its food. Yes...they wash their food. I also would consider taking it off your hands if you cant handle it.

Man, that thing's cute. I want it....but I don't think it'd go well in my apartment. Maybe I should move home? I don't think mom would mind a new pet....hehehe.

do us all a favor and let it go now cuz you know you wont want to later.

No chance it's going to survive on it's own at this point, it needs bottle fed and it's eyes are barely open. :-\

Are they actually washing the food or just moistening it? I was under the impression that they needed to get their food wet because they didn't produce saliva.

My friend and I were camping at the Kern River in Cali one time and we left a bunch of our food out, well, the racoons came and drug it down to the river and went to town. All of our bread and chips ended up in the river, but we got a laugh out of it.

Is there a difference? :D Yes you are right....but...to me that is still washing the food.
