I don't know handguns, but I want to. I'm looking for something to take to the range and carry in the truck when I'm in the boonies - I don't have a ccw and don't need something I can conceal right now. I have a chance to trade into an ATI M1911gi .45 with an Act and Kimber mag from another forum member. Would this gun suit my needs? A little browsing shows values for this gun kinda all over the place, what's the best way to put a value on it?

It's nothing I'd want to try and conceal, but a fun gun to shoot. The ammo can get a little spendy if you shoot a lot. I'd check into a .22 conversion for it to make the range time more wallet friendly. If you don't mind me asking, what will you be trading for it?

I have had a few 1911 models. Impact is a good reference, but can sometimes be inconsistent. I usually use www.Budsgunshop.com for actual (new) market values. Also check out KSL's classifieds for used gun prices, but keep in mind that a lot of the sellers on there are opportunists. You can often find new guns for the same price as a used one selling on KSL. You just have to know where to look.

As for a 1911, it is a great platform and can be a great gun. It has a slim grip and frame. GI models are usually pretty basic. No extended beavertail, no extended or ambidextrous safety, spur hammer, basic 3 dot sight, no "speed bump" grip safety, etc.

I have a Springfield Mil Spec full size 1911 and have carried it concealed with out much problem. I'm only 5' 10" and 170 pounds. All you need is a good holster.

I currently carry a "compact" 1911 that has a 3.5" barrel on an officers size frame. No problem hiding it at all. Again, you just have to have a good holster.

Again, if you can get it for a good deal, you won't be disappointed. It is a proven platform that has withstood the test of time.

1911 is the ar15 of the hand gun world. Most models will accompany other manufacturer parts very interchange and very customizable. Like said above ammunition can get spendy. But, I would only own 1 other model of hand gun and that is the Springfield XD .45 my best friend conceal carries a 1911 everyday and has no problem with it and he is 5'8" 189. Like said above holster is a huge factor when conceal carrying. The compact or ACP are nice for conceal carrying but, I think they are hideous! Plus shorter barrel less accurate at long distances.
