The location of the STS turbo prevents it from getting as hot as a turbo in the standard underhood/close-to-the-engine location.

True. But the loss of heat also reduces boost available too...

I've worked at STS for the last 3 years and I had/have a custom built rear mount setup on my Camaro.
I haven't installed a F150 kit. but I did drive a customers F150 back from the thanksgiving point carshow. Needless to say it had some pretty good passing power running 8psi boost.

The theory behind the turbo in the back is the same as putting an intercooler on a blower. Cold air is thicker and compacts more thus producing more HP.

Sorry, the complete kit is $5995 retail.
Minus about $1k w/o tuning, and minus about $700 w/o intercooler.
I could probably save you a couple bills though...
