Mercedes Unimog

Cross-country in an early Unimog is a tall order FWIW, is there a more highway freindly rig that would fit the need? There are a few Mog owners here on RME and I have a few local customers that run them, I can't think of any sans the newer Freightliner models that would be comfortable for long hauls.

Your year range puts you in the realm of a mog that could have enough power and gearing (overdrive) to do the task.
That being said, I pretty much agree with Kurt. Unimogs, even newish ones weren't really designed for long distance on-road travel.
I love my mog (416 doka) for exploring and fairly rough offroading. I've driven it to the rubicon and back and to moab many times, but it was never too much fun on the highway.
The year range you are talking about would put you into a U1300 / U1700 / U2100 or other variant. They are all bigger and more comfortable than mine, but I suggest finding a way take a long drive in one to see what you are getting into.

Jay Couch over in Denver built a cool mog for magpul that was driven around at the shotshow a year or two ago. If you are after something customized, I would highly recommend him - www.couchoffroad.com.

I have to second a recommendation for Scott at Expedition Imports. He's knowledgeable, friendly, and shoots straight. All of the people I know with Mogs have said the same about him... Eurotruck as well, they were able to find some parts Scott didn't have, direct from Germany, for a friend of mine.
I'll also agree that Mogs suck on the highway. They just aren't built for it. Trailering one would be a smarter way to go, IMO.

I picked an old one up here in Colorado Springs years ago for a friend. I will check out that lot again for you this week. The guy had quite a collection of them.
