Metal Cutting/Shearing Cheap!?

I am helping a friend build a custom grille to an old volvo he has. He has a sheet of 12"x24" 1/8" plate that he needs cut into 1/2"x24" strips. I think that he is going after a custom billet grille style. He is going to run these flat-ways across the grille.

Anyways he needs to find a place that will shear it at this size for him. Metal mart in Lehi quoted $4.00 a cut!!!!!! ouch.

Can't you just buy bar stock in the dimensions you want? Wasatch Steel carries 1/8 x 3/4 Flat Bar that would probably work and I would guess would be cheaper than that many cuts.

I have a 10 ft. length of that exact stuff from Wasatch steel. It was about $10 or so.
