Mine Bombing

Has anyone else been following this story:

This is the first I've ever heard of "mine bombing" and I am just fascinated at the sheer level of stupidity it must take to do it. I feel bad for these kids that have sustained the injuries, but still. Throwing Molotov cocktails down a mine shaft? Really? Not so bright an idea there.

Not sure I follow? Personally I think it could be dangerous, but other than some glass shards or plastic down an already closed mine shaft what does it hurt? I've certainly done much more dangerous and stupid things in the name of entertainment.

It is patented mine claim owned by someone. I wouldn't want someone doing that on my property, not to mention any type of structure or equipment that might be under ground

That is info that wasn't in the article. It stated it was an abandoned mine shaft. With the fact that it is grated by the DOGM I would assume as well that it is no longer a current claim.

If it is currently claimed, get em' for tresspassing.

I don't see where they stated that they were BYU students.

A total of 12 people were injured in the incident that happened about 11 p.m. July 16. The practice of "mine bombing" has been occurring for years, according to those familiar with it. College students, many from Brigham Young University, go to abandoned mine shafts and drop Molotov cocktails, or gasoline filled bottles, through the openings of the rebar grates blocking the entrances.

We don't need to read between the lines to figure it out...

In Saturday night's incident, the source told the Deseret News there were initially two groups of students at the mine dropping pop bottles filled with about an inch of gasoline into the mine.

I'm sure they didn't previously mention this is most common with BYU students to later reference "students" and be referring to another university.

BYU students are just as dumb or dangerous as students at any other university. I'm not denying that they were Y students, I'd just like the facts stated without needing to assume.

Funny that you say its dumb BYU students. My nephew talked about him and his buddies going out and doing it and they went to either BYU or UVU at the time. Its a perfect combo for boys because you have FIRE which we all like. I'm mid-40's and I still like fire and then an explosion. Who doesnt like explosions here? Given the age and the no one will get hurt attitude, I think we would all do it. In fact, I bet we have all made some sort of bomb in our young dumb days whether is was from dry ice, bathroom cleaner or black powder.

The DOGM has grated hundreds of privately owned claims, usually in cahorts with the owners but often by using fear tactics. There are very few large mines in the Eureka area proper that are not still privately owned or sit on patented land.

From the SLTrib Article:

"Officers are investigating possible felony charges against those who made the gasoline bombs in addition to trespassing charges."

Looks like they may slap them with trespassing too!
