What: QTD classes in conjunction with NPLD service projects
Where: Dutchmans Flat, America Fork Canyon
When: Friday September 26th and Sunday September 28th
Who: You!

We'll be gathering up AFC Friday evening at Dutchman's Flat (see map) for camping, service projects, classes and presentations, and some wheeling on Sunday. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. We have some presenters lined up and room for several more. I've put out feelers to a couple folks, but let's not make the usual suspects carry the load here. If you know something you can share, step up! Anything tangentially related to wheeling is fair game. It doesn't have to be a class - if you'd like to share a memorable trip report or would like to lead a roundtable discussion, by all means lets get you on the schedule. If anyone from Tread Lightly or U4WDA or any other land use orgs wants to present that would awesome too.

We're capping the number of rigs at Dutchmans Flat somewhere around 20. If we get more trucks than that showing up, there's plenty of room close by to camp. I don't think we need to cap the number of people attending presentations though - instructors please let me know if you want do to cap your presentations so I can run a signup list for you.

If somebody wants to organize a potluck for Friday or Saturday night, that'd be cool, otherwise we'll all be on our own for grub.

Friday evening
  • 6:30pm - Trail Welding - Jeeper
  • 7:15pm - Winch Basics - Brett (Maverick)
  • 8:00pm - Intro to Camping Gear - Davy (Mesha) and Jami
  • 8:45pm - Tread Lightly!/Trail Ethics - Stephen
Saturday
Sunday morning
  • 9:30am - Intro to Modifying Your Vehicle - Ryan (Jinxspot)
  • 10:15am - Beginners Crawling/Spotting Techniques - Ryan (Jinxspot)
  • 11:00am - Recovery Gear 101 - Kevin B.

After the Sunday morning classes, we'll wheel. Mineral Basin is an appropriate trail for mildly built trucks (I recommend minimum 32s and armor for a couple spots, a locker is helpful, stock trucks can make it but drive at your own risk), and if there's guys that aren't ready for that we can lead groups up Forest Lake (minimum 31s, armor is helpful but not required, stock trucks can drive this trail) or other milder trails as necessary. Spotters will be on hand to help you through the tough spots.

Bump! I've edited the OP with specific time slots for classes. I totally made it all up without consulting anyone, so instructors please contact me if I've put you in a time slot that doesn't work, and I'll adjust as necessary. I've also added a list of confirmed attendees - a couple presenters have asked for an idea of how many will be attending, so post up if you're coming and I'll keep track, thanks!

We will have our two kids(davy, cedar) with us as well.

What camping gear does everyone want us to talk about?
Tents, stoves, sleeping bags, pads, water cleaning, 10 essentials, clothing, layering, site selection, footwear, fire building, etc?

We could do a quick hit on a bunch of topics(what we did last time). We will also answer any questions. If you have a question ahead of time please PM it and we will come prepared.

Does any body have some extra, not important batteries that they would let be used for the welding class? I have the battery in my camper and the truck I will be driving up in.. But if something were to go wrong, it's a long walk out of the canyon without a battery ;)

I also have not slept in anything besides a camper, or back seat of a 4 door in 14 years. I don't own a tent, and will be in a reg. cab truck. I am back to being a complete camping newbie when it comes to nights like this... Please wish me luck! Ha.

Man I really want to go, but that's my birthday weekend and dunno if the wife's made plans. How soon of a notice do we have to give? How old are the kids that are going?

My boy is eight, Davy's kids are about the same age, I don't know what other spawn will be present.

I have ordered myself a tent.. It should even fit in the bed of my truck to keep me off the ground if wanted.

This sounds like a fun event. I'm going to try and make it, but I doubt my junk will be running by then. I'll have to drive my truck up. If I can make it I'd be happy to help Brett with winching/recovery.

Bump. Who else is coming? The other thread was full of guys chomping at the bit for a QTD, and here's a great one with some awesome presenters and classes.
