Well we went down to Moab last week for 4 days of wheeling and hiking. The weather was great, and the trails were even better. In three days of wheeling and one day of hiking we only saw one motorcycle rider, one jogger, and two hikers on the trails. On Wednesday afternoon we did Top of the World since this was the maiden voyage for my Scrambler I thought we should start with a 3 rated trail and work our way up. The trail was more challenging than it normally is because the top half of the trail had 4-5" of snow on it. Snow definitely changes the nature of "slick rock". The view from the top is always worth the drive. The next day we did Fins and Things and tried to connect over to Porcupine Rim but ran out of daylight before we got to Porcupine. The next day we did Steel Bender which was a lot of fun. The last day was spent hiking to some arches. Our three jeeps made it through all of the wheeling without any breakdowns or damage. I came to love my new e-lockers and found out why scramblers are called "tail draggers". Here are a few pictures of our trip.

Looks great Dave! So how'd the CJ8 work, were you happy with it? Which E-lockers are you running?

The cj8 worked great, I was very happy with it, it went up everything I pointed it up. We didn't skip any of the hard spots on the trails and I was surprised at how well we could get up the nasty spots. On one of the hardest obstacles on Steel Bender I went up and it felt a bit "tight", it went up fine but when I got to the top I realized I had left the emergency brake on . I really liked the fuel injected motor in the Scrambler (a 99 TJ 4.0), it never flooded or stumbled no matter how steep it got and I got a touch over 20 MPG on the highway. The only wierd thing it did was leak out some gas from the charcoal canister when the tank was full and I was stopped on steep tippy spot. The lockers that I put in the dana 44 axles are Eaton E-Lockers. They worked great and it was nice to be able to turn them on and off as needed with a simple touch of a button. What I found was that the lockers allowed me to crawl up the tough stuff slowly without having to apply too much gas. The best wheeler award of the trip had to go to my son in his red comanche that he rebuilt, he made it up every obstacle on his first try.

Dave, what is the width of you CJ8's axles? The Scrambler looks real nice.

Thanks, the front Dana 44 axle is from a 78 Wagoneer and has 4 inches removed from the drivers side so its width is around 57 inches. The rear 44 is from an 88 Wagoneer and it is 58.5 inches wide.

Nice Scrambler! That hardtop makes it look real sharp. Nice job and nice pics!

Thanks also, the hardtop and rear liftgate need a bit of paint and they will look even better. The wife likes grey for the top and I could go white or grey.

Dave, looks like a fun trip. I'm glad the CJ-8 worked out like you wanted it to. You did a really nice job on it. I saw it in early January right after you painted it and was really impressed with how solid a job you did on it.

Thanks, we had a lot of fun putting it together and so far everything is working well. Even the blended electrical system (xj and cj) that I put together is working well. I liked the cruise control on the trip down to Moab and the delay wipers have been great when we have been out in the rain. It is nice to have the features of a new Jeep in an old one.
