Moab, Fisher Towers & Onion Creek, Dec 16th

We took the Dodge down to Moab today to check out the Fisher Towers & Onion Creek. The last storm that came thru the area left quite a bit of snow, up to 6" was still left in some parts. From the Fisher Towers parking area we hiked out towards the scenic area to get closer to the towers.

After hiking at the Fisher Towers, we headed down the road to Onion Creek. It's a mild road, easy to do in 2WD when it's dry. With the ice & snow, we were in 4 High almost all the time. After crossing the creek several times, we climbed out of the canyon & headed towards the Taylor Ranch. The snow up here was deeper, but the traction was still good.

After poking around the valley & showing Catherine where I rode my KLR last month, we headed back down the canyon.

It's an amazing area, I rode my motorcycle up Onion Creek at the end of Oct and into the LaSals. It would be a great route to retrace in a 4x4. Camping up on North Beaver Mesa would be too cool.

The creek itself is closed to travel, but Onion Creek Road is opened. You probably cross the creek itself around 20 times driving up the road and it's usually a direct shot across the creek.

We had an Easter egg hunt down in the canyon with the kids a few years ago, fun!! I love going up Onion Creek, parking and just letting everyone run around and play. :chris:

Is Onion Creek closed? Going down the creek where it's fun?

Onion Creek wash has been closed for about 3 years to the public. We have been able to drive the creek bed for permitted groups such as the EJS, Isuzu etc.ending this year. Last year on December 31st Dan Mick lead a group through as a Red Rock 4-Whellers run on his permit for the last time. Now it is closed to all since January 1st 2007. This is just one more thing we have lost. SUWA and the Great Old Broads for Wilderness were instrumental in having it closed under the guise of pollution from our vehicles going into the Colorado River. Onion Creek got its name from the onion smell which comes from high levels of arsenic. Since when does a drop of oil out trumps a deadly poison? This was rs277 rite of way used for more than a century before the new road and bridge was built.
