Moab heads up

Just passing along what a cop told me in Moab. I was pulled over for going a few miles over the speed limit on my way to Sand Flats area. The cop gave me some grief about no fender flairs on the back of the LTJ.

Then he told me there were going to be 5 UHP mobile inspection stations in Moab on Friday and Saturday. He told me I'd get a ticket from them for the missing flairs. Funny thing was that a tubed buggy passed while I was pulled over.

Long story short, I didn't get a ticket, but word is they're really clamping down on illegal rigs this week. Make sure and have CURRENT proof of insurance and reg also.

Hmm....mobile inspection stations? Just up in sand flats or elsewhere?

EDIT: And personally I think that it's pretty dumb that they do this on Safari. If you want to enforce the law, do it year round. Don't just choose when there are lots of people there.

But, that's me :p

this makes me nervous. :(

but I am already commited to go, besides wheeling a street legal rig kinda sucks, I usually rip off flares and mud flaps on rocks.

About time, thats what I have to say.

I agree.

It's great there doing this

I think there smart for doing it durring EJS, you get alot of rigs together at once. Like fishing you don't go fishing where there's only a few fish you go where you know there's alot.

Yeah, you don't go fishing when you know where the fish are!

Especially when it's not about public safety, it's about all those fat tickets.

Don't get me started.

That's all this is for. They may say it's for "public safety" but in all truth, it's more about handing out tickets. If it was for safety, this would be happening year round and as we all know, it doesn't. I wouldn't be suprised that people get pulled over for anything and everything. As Bart found out, couple miles over the speed limit (which would be fine any other week) is now something they go after you for.

How's it not about public saftey?

If they got any money from the tickets they wrote, I'd agree.

If it was about public safety they would be stopping drinking and drug abuse, around town and out on the trails. I've seen a lot of drunken people driving street legal rigs. I don't think buggys driving around is the most unsafe thing that is going on there. I was down last weekend and had no problems with them (however, my rig is street legal). Don't speed on the road to pritchet!!

What they are enforcing is the law. If your vehicle isn't street legal (in violation of the law and thus possibly a risk to public safety), then it should not be on the street/trail. Keep your vehicle street legal and you won't have any problems. Pretty simple logic in my opinion. Don't get mad at the police if its your fault.

Then why are they not doing this year round? Why are they targetting people during Safari, but once it's over, they ignore things?

Yeah, sure all about safety:rolleyes: Those dump trucks with an uncovered load are worse than any little rig with the tires poking out, and yet I've never seen one pulled over.

Just so happens I stop dump trucks everyday ( but I'm at a POE). Why not call on a truck with a load like that? There's very few officers that know that trucks can't have there load above the side boards of the truck.

I'm pissed at whoever is out for the money-grab. That's not right, and it is sure as hell calculated.

edit: I should say publicly that I appreciate UT's cops. Overall I have had very little issue with them, UHP in particular has been excellent on the few occasions that I've been stopped... for good reason. :D

as we were leaving on sunday night I saw a moab police officer for the first time that weekend... he had a tube buggy from nevada pulled over by the south end maverik... he was giving him the whole run around the vehicle thingy... the buggy didn't have turn signals, mud flaps, body panels, a windshield or anything that is required for a street legal rig... yet it was licensed in Nevada...

but like I posted elsewhere I didn't see one moab police officer all weekend until sunday night... but saw tons of UHP's everywhere...
