A friend of mine is heading to Moab next week and has a rear wheel drive only Toyota 4runner. He also has an ARB rear locker. Will he be able to do Hell's Revenge, Poison Spider or Fins???

What do you think?

Thanks,

Jason

good luck. he will have to be strapped up allot of obstacles or give it a huge bump and rally up it and risk breaking parts.

Is this a factory 2WD or is it a 4WD with an INOP front end?

4Chin on here blew his front diff in his 2nd gen and still wheeled all weekend and only took 2 straps. He has a lock-right and the 2.28 reduction from the factory t-case.

If it is indeed a factory 2WD 4Runner with a 5spd he will not be having fun at all. He's better off with an auto but no reduction and no front end pulling him through will really bring the suck.

Another vote for expect body damage, and one hell of a stressful trip if he hits those trails.

possible, maybe dangerous railing some of the fins and steep inclines. more likely he will end up breaking rear..that would be a pain to get out. He could easly do some of the other trails like 3D.

Just depends on how much he wants to beat it and how the parts hold up. Rear wheel only will take the finesse out of the equation. We came out of Golden Spike earlier this year with RWD only in a built YJ, front was broken. We made it all the way out but it wasn't pretty. There was lots of wide open throttle, and carrying momentum while bumping and crashing over rocks. We did have a locked 60 in the back with hardened shafts and a well built Chev 350 motor, TH400 trans, and an Atlas.
Personally I'd never head out on those trails intentionally with that configuration, and would certainly not want to be part of a group with a rig like that. You can do it, but it will be a looong day and not too fun for those involved.

I used to go off road in a 2wd truck, its not recommended! He will have to rally the piss out of it to get anywhere! For safety reasons, I would not do it! There is plenty of trails and scenic routes in the Moab area, that wont be dangerous in a 2wd.

Emphatically no. There is absolutely no reason to subject his vehicle to the type of abuse and everyone else on the trail to the hassle. As other have said, its doable in a pinch, but not by choice.
Take him to the sand dunes, he will have a blast there.
