Montero Sport Diff

Sorry I am a noob, but i am trying to find some solid info.

I have a blown rear differential on my 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 3.0L LS. It has the 4.90 gear ratio and it is non locking. I am trying to find a replacement diff and I can not seem to find an exact match. Are these rears interchangeable? I've called the dealer numerous times with my VIN # and donor vehicles VIN #'s and still can not find a matching P# for the rear. Am I wasting my time here?

Any help is greatly appreciated, I'm pretty much lost at this point and just want my truck fixed so I can go fishing.

Most if not all sports with that motor have 4.90 gears. The earlier thirds from the big montero will fit but will have lower numerically gears. I've seen a few a the local junkyards. I could probably locate and pull one for you for a resonable fee compared to buying a new third from the dealer. I started a big thread in the isuzu section on pirate about the mobtero axles.

It's just my spider gears and a few bearings and such that need to be replaced. Can I replaced them with any spider gears from a 4.90?? I am pretty much lost at this point. Can not find an exact matching PN to my rear end. Do you know which gears will fit mine? I can find a bunch of diffs, but just not the exact one I need. That's why I'm wondering if these are universal and could I go with something else? Thanks for the response any help is appreciated. I'd even pay someone a small fee for finding me the right diff. at this point.

Well in the sports there are only 2 thirds available in the states.

limited slip and open.

gear ratio won't matter for the spiders.

Honestly, it's easier (less time consuming) to replace the whole third member than bearings and spiders, and it will be cheaper unless you have a press to remove the bearings and the tools to reset the backlash (and possibly pinion depth if the pinion gear is toast).

pinion gear is still good. so can i change gear ratios? I am pretty much lost at this point. I've been given so much information that I'm not even sure what is correct anymore.

My truck is a 2000 Montero Sport LS 3.0L with 4.90 non-locking rear differential. If you can find one for me I will by all means compensate you for your efforts. I just need a rear end that will work in my truck. Ideally an exact replacement, but any replacement (working) will do. Thanks for your help.

what my mechanic was saying it just get him good gears and he will swap the diff carrier from the good one into mine. not sure how interchangeable these parts are.
