I have my toyota with the original 20 r motor. Runs fine, carb runs as good as any on hills and side hills, but not much in the power dept though...... But huge horsepower really isn't what I want.
I have a 98 gmc sonoma (2wd) with a 2.2 4cyl and a 4l60e transmission that just died.
Here is my thought. Tahke the Fuel injected motor from the sonoma and with an adapter put it in the toyota. More power, not goning to break anything or win any drag races, but probably somewhere near double my current power output, and all the benifits for fuel injection.
That leaves me with a 2wd sonoma with no drivetrain. And it is just begging for a carburated small block 383\350 combo.
I am thinking that swapping these 2 motors with adapters and what not is going to be about the same price as a rebuild on the 4l60e trans. I get fuel injection on the toyota, and a sweet V8 sonoma.:greg:
What do you all think?

Does the 4cylinder auto trans have the same SAE bellhousing pattern (#3??) as a regular V8? If so I see no reason you couldn't user an Advance Adapter back to the Toy 5spd... Driveline mods, cooling mods, motor mounts, electrical, etc... shouldn't be too bad?

Another thing to consider... are you going to be able to pull the harness out of the Sonoma for the fuel injection? I don't think Howell or Painless make one for teh 4cly... so you will need to be good with the wiring, and figure out something for the Sonoma (find a donor harness?). Some late GM vehicles (including TBI setups) include alot of other vehicle functions (wipers, headlights, etc) in the same harness as the fuel injection.

Swap your 20R head onto a 22R, that combo is supossed to make up to 140-150hp, thanks to a higher compression ratio.

It's alot cheaper than swapping motors from diffrent brand vehicles! :)

My brother just put a carbed 350 and a Sagina 4-speed in his 2wd S10 and it hauls! Keep the 20R and figure out how to make it run like mine    For the cost of two engine swaps you could easily take the money you would have spent, and sell your 2.2L to get a nice 350/350 combo for the S10 :D. But if you do decide to rid yourself of the 20R you know who to call :)

It's a half good idea. Too bad the state wont allow a carb under a Sanoma hood......

Really? I thought it would be fine as long as it burns clean enough.

I got a better solution. Put a small block in both of em:D

the 2.2 will have either a GM 60*V bellhousing, or a GMI4 bellhousing neither are easily adapted to. The smallblock everyone does, but I think for weight I'd recommend finding a 4.3 vortec, they can be had for about 1200 with electronics, make good power and good torque and will fit under the hood a lot easier and they're a 90*V which means all you need are smallblock adapters.

I am not sure what the bell housing pattern is on the 2.2L. I *thought* that because the tranny was a 4l60e that it was the same bell housing pattern as the v6 and v8's. It seems more and more that that might not be the case. If not, then I will be keeping th 20R in the toyota for now, But I think that the sonoma will still be getting a 383\350. My major motivation in wanting to put the 2.2l in the toyota was because I allready had it (Cheap), and I could pretty much strip the sonoma of all wiring (sp) that I needed for the swap, because a carbed sbc wouldn't need all that much to make it run.
I will do a little more research and keep you updated.

The donor engine has to be the same year or newer that the vehicle it's going into, and still pass the 98 emission standards. That's a hard one to prove, but obviously carbs died long before 98.

He's in Logan, so it's not an issue right now but it's comming down the pipe in the near future. He might get lucky and get grandfathered in, but good luck selling it in the future.
