Motorcycle Safety Inspections

So I recently picked up a 2000 TTR250. It is titled street legal and has turn signals, lights, etc. I'm assuming that it should pass safety inspection, but I'm curious as to where you guys take your bikes to get inspected. Preferably somewhere in south end of salt lake county or northern Utah county. Want to find someone that won't go out of their way to hassle me or find something wrong. Or lemme know what shops to avoid. PM me if necessary. Thanks.

I've always gone to Jiffy Lube. Never had any problems. Bikes are easy, and most of the time since they don't usually know what to look for, they usually just pass them. :)

x2. I took mine to jiffy lube. I was 100% legal on all counts, but my brother passed without dot tires, and the rear brake light didn't actuate with the front brake lever.

having said that, I'll NEVER take a car to get inspected at Jiffy Lube, just my dirt bikes.

DOT tires are not required. So your brother's bike would be mostly legal as well. The DOT tires is a misconception/misinterpretation of the law. It says:

Tires must be highway approved in accordance with UCA 41-6a-1636

If you look up that Code, it is about tread depth, studs, etc. Nothing about having to be DOT stamped.

Right on, thanks guys. I will give Jiffy Lube a try. My bike actually has DOT tires on it.

Took Steve and Caleb's advice and took mine to Jiffy Lube. The guys were super cool about it. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes...no hassle whatsoever.

nice! Now you're obligated to go riding with us. I ride an XT225 to work every day. It's pretty much a street-legal ttr-225. Great bike.

Pretty positive the answer is no. It says IF equipped, check it. I've never had mine checked before.
I was looking at the code last night and it looks like it's changed since this thread. It now says:

A. HEADLAMPS
1. Check for proper headlamp equipment and proper functioning.
a. REJECT when:
1) Headlamp is not marked USDOT approved (unless vintage
motorcycle prior to USDOT markings).
2) Headlamp minimum height is less than 22 inches or more
than 54 inches above the road surface.
3) The high beam indicator fails to function when equipped.
4) Headlamp fails to light, or headlamp switch fails to
function.
5) Passing lights function with high beam headlights.
(Passing lights are not considered headlamps)

6) Headlamp coverings, not authorized by the
department, are placed on or in front of any
headlamp.
*NOTE: One headlamp is required and not more than two headlamps
are permitted. Pulsating headlights, if USDOT approved, are
legal both day and night.

So nowhere does it say highbeam is required. There's also an overview, section 12, that says:

section 12 said:
A. Two Wheel Dirt Bikes
1. Two wheel dirt bikes may be inspected provided that they have been
modified to be street legal. They shall be equipped with the following
items, which shall comply with the regulations of the department (UCA
41-6a-1506).
a. One head lamp which, when factory equipped with an automatic
lighting ignition system, shall not be disconnected.
b. One tail lamp.
c. Either a tail lamp or a separate lamp which shall be so constructed
and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration
plate.
d. One red reflector on the rear, either as part of the tail lamp or
separately.
e. One stop lamp.
f. A braking system, other than a parking brake, as provided in UCA
41-6a-1623.
g. A horn or warning device in accordance with UCA 41-6a-1625.
h. A muffler and emission control system in accordance with UCA
41-6a-1626.
i. A mirror in accordance with UCA 41-6a-1627
j. Tires must be highway approved in accordance with UCA 41-6a-
1636.
k. Non-metal gas tanks are acceptable.
l. Working odometers, although not a safety inspection requirement,
are nevertheless required on all vehicles in order to be registered
in the state of Utah. (UCA 41-1a-901 Odometers required)
m. Equipped with turn signals if manufactured after January 1, 1973
(49 CFR 571.108), (UCA 41-6a-1601(2)(a)).
a) REJECT when:
1) Any of the above requirements are not met.

Again, nothing about having to have a highbeam. It used to be worded, if equipped, check it, but now it doesn't even say that.
