I ended up getting Cannondales....they are the 27.5 Catalyst 1 and Foray 3. The Catalyst 1 has hydro brakes and so far I've liked it. I haven't really taken it on many rides, but did do a 10mile ride right after getting it.
I think any of the "big" names you will be fine. I wanted to stick with Cannondale, Specialized, Trek, Giant, Marin mostly, but would've considered Kona, GT, Diamondback. I ended up with the Cannondale because the shop I bought it from gives free unlimited tune-ups as long as I own it....and it's close to my house.
I did happen to see that someone is setting up a Specialized bike clearance April 7/8 in an unrented retail space by Costco and Home Depot on 2100 S. 300W. They have this, and may have some at the sale for a good deal. The components on this seem to be better then the stuff on the Trek
