Mt. Bikers...advice please!

I'm gonna be building (or buying) a bike for this coming riding season. I used to ride a fair amount but haven't for years so I don't know what all the good stuff is anymore. What parts (EVERYTHING from frame to shifters to brakes to rims) would you guys suggest? I plan to ride most terrains; trails around here, Moab stuff, I even plan to ride to work occasionally so an all around type bike (if one exists) would be ideal. I've always had a hardtail and don't have much time on a full suspension other than playing on my bro's, my mom's, or my dad's. I don't want to build a "Dream" bike, something that won't kill the budget but will still be a good bike. So gimme your advice

Probably the first thing to determine is how much do you want to spend.
This also goes with how determined you are to actually use it. If you spend 500 will you get the same use out of it if you spend 1500. An example would be a tread mill or home gym.

You could probably bild a decent one pretty cheap. Also I have seen some killer deals at some swap meets and on some of the local boards in some shops. Ebay has good deals as well as mtbr.com in the forum section.

I have always been a hard tail fan but might be switching over soon.

I have had some experience with bikes for many years and live down the road from you and could give you some pointers on building or helping ya.

Get a used FSR or similar, later 90's are good and probably cheap now. Full suspension literally saves your ass, but the sproing feels wrong until you get used to it. I keep my preload cranked pretty high on road, newer shocks have lockouts if you want to go that route, which is sweet.

I'm a huge fan of Gripshift, mostly because you can trim the front derailleur better than on Shimano, also because it's Ebayable cheap and less moving parts. High end SHimano stuff rocks though, and is very sexy. The rear derailleurs... eh, GripShift is nice there too, but pricey and a little more fragile. For my hardtail beater bike I've had a good workhorse Shimano XT on there forever and it's great.
Vbrakes are fine for much of the riding you'll likely be doing, and are cheap and easy... just like yo momma! Discs rock in Eastern conditions. I used to actually grind through rims in the muck w/rim brakes.
Cranks, whatever you want. Again, XT, I'm running XT on the Stumpjumper hardtail and some RaceFace on the Ellsworth FS. THe more you pay, the less you weigh...
Pedals: I'm still running OLD (like, '95 old) red Ritchey clipless on both bikes, big platform and easy to clip in/out. I'd probably go with some Crank Brothers EggBeaters with the platforms now... and if clipless isn't your thing, the old parallelogram-style Shimano DX pedals (they're not called that anymore but you may remember them if you BMX'd at all in the 80/90's heheh).
Chris King headsets and bottom brackets absolutely RULE if you can justify the buy-in. They are more or less lifetime parts. If not, I've had good luck w/Cane Creek headsets and good old Shimano XT bottom brackets.
chains: Sachs or Shimano. SRAM makes good ones too.
Rims/hubs: again, the more you pay the less you weigh. This is one area I actually do recommend shelling out a little for if you want: rotational mass is felt more here... I've been running Mavic rims (517's.. but they are called somethign else now) with Chris King hubs ($$$$$$$$$$$$$), 14/15ga spokes... But the Stumpjumper is on Sun/XT wheels that are a little heavier but less finicky.
Tires: for street use, there are a lot of good wider options these days. Dirt, I like Specialized tires in general, many options to choose from. My favorite tire of all time though, is the Ritchey Zmax, in 2.35 size. Big tire, but rounded, so you ride on a thin section of it. Very predictable offroad. The Ellsworth currently has a set of Bontrager Jones tires, 2.1f/1.9r, again predictable in UT conditions.

OR you could ebay a couple yr old deal and be pleased as well. Depends on your budget.

I just built up a new hardtail.

Look at Jamis frames they are great and don't cost a ton.
Sram parts I find are as good if not better than shimano, If your not into the gripshift they have triggers out now.
I love my panaracer tires, Fire XC's.
For cranks check out Truvativ. They make great cranks.
For a fork look at the Manitou Black. It is a budget fork, but still has good performance.
Brakes, you can save money by going with rim brakes, but I would just go with disc brakes. you can get good deals on cable accuated ones for around $40 per tire.
I've found smokin' deals on wheelsets lately, it all depends on how much your going to jump the bike on what kind to get.
Try online places if your mechanically inclined.

Thanks for the info guys, I really appreciate the good advice so far.

I have actually built a bike before (did everything, including threaded my own rims even) like I said though, its just been so long since I have even bothered with anything bike related I didn't have a clue as to where to start.

alright, how in the world can people say you can build them for $700-$750  :D

I just priced out what I would consider a basic hardtail bike with disc brakes and it comes in at over $1300

Front Fork (Shock) 2005 Manitou Nixon Elite $279.98
Headset Cane Creek S-3 $33.98
Stem Salsa Motoace SUL Stem $26.00
Handlebars Easton EA50 O/S Riser Handlebar $49.98
Bar Ends
Grips
Shifters SHIMANO XT® SL-M751 RAPIDFIRE® SHIFTERS $112.99
Brake Levers AVID FR-5 BRAKE LEVERS $40.00
Front Brake AVID BALL BEARING SEVEN DISC BRAKE $75.00
Rear Brake AVID BALL BEARING SEVEN DISC BRAKE $75.00
Frame Sette Reken Hardtail Frame $99.98
Front Rim SHIMANO XT® DISC/XM321 WHEELS $109.00
Rear Rim SHIMANO XT® DISC/XM321 WHEELS $123.00
Front Tire
Rear Tire
Crankset Truvativ Stylo Team GXP Crankset $189.98
Chain
Front Derailleur SHIMANO XT® FD-M760 FRONT DERAILLEUR $33.99
Rear Derailleur SHIMANO XT® M750 REAR DERAILLEUR $39.00
Seatpost KALLOY UNO SEATPOST $19.00
Saddle Sette IXA Gel Chromoly Rail Saddle $21.98
Cassette SHIMANO XT® CS-M760 CASSETTE $59.98

Total
$1,388.84

This includes everything besides tires, barends, chain, and grips (atleast everything I can think of). I went with Discs over v-brakes because its only about $75 more but if you upgrade later it will be around an additional $350...

This is pricing between JensonUSA, Pricepoint, and a little at Performance Bike.

if you could compare my list of parts prices to your buddy's prices that would be awesome, that is if he has these parts still :p

You can do it because you can ebay half of that crap LOL
or buy complete for less.

for future reference, I got my wife a sweet Stumpjumper for $300 less because it was last years model. That's like 30%.

yeah, I think I'll watch ebay a little, I know my dad built a very nice full suspension bike with all XTR components for $1500 cause he ebayed most everything...its all brand new parts too. I need to check some of the local shops for some last season deals (hell, even a couple seasons old is fine with me if I can get a good deal :D)

my buddy says he can actually still get anything because he still has his accounts open. I'll check on the haros he has. I know he had some pretty sweet hard tails and even a few nice full susp. bikes. As for misc parts, I know he still has just about everything. I'll ask him about pricing.

I have a gary fisher aquila hardtail that's been in my garage for a few months now. I think it's a 16 inch frame and it has LX quality parts on it. prolly needs to be gone over and a bunch of parts replaced but MattL, if you want a great platform to start from, I'd let it go for 100 bucks to clear the space in my garage. It's been a great bike for me and still is pretty much ready to go after a good tune-up.
