I just found out about this today. How about a 90th anniversary trip of old military hardware down the old Lincoln Highway? They will be arriving in convoy in Murray July 1st, transittiing through Tooele to Dugway, enroute to Ely, NV. I'm trying to get more info to see where they will be exactly, and also to verify they will be passing through Tooele and through Johnson's pass.

I'm buying some extra memory cards...

Anyone know more about this?

OK FOLKS!!! I just found out the convoy will be stopping at Murray Park Wednesday the 1st. THey set up "camp" and have displays and other neat stuff. I'm still trying to find out which route they are using once they leave Dugway headed for Ely.

If you are into old vehicles, and old military iron, this is likely a once in a lifetime event, and I don't intend to miss it.

I can answer your questions (or get answers) re the convoy

Hi, all. My husband, Mark Ounan, is driving in the convoy (I just spent 4 days driving across Nebraska with them). He and his passenger, Harry Fike (a WWII vet) are driving a 1918 Dodge Army staff car. On July 1, the convoy will be driving from Green River, WY, stopping at the Fort Bridger Museum (probably around 9 am - the convoy usually pulls out by 7 am). Lunch usually around noon - at the Machine Shop in Evanston, WY, then on to Murray, UT - the convoy will rally at Murray Park. They usually get to their final stop between 5 - 6 pm. I can get more info from my husband (I'm back home in DC) as the date gets closer and they get more schedule info (the maps are usually passed out that morning! lol). They will leave Murray & travel to Ely, NV, the next day (a long day of driving (231 miles @ 35 mph). If you need/want more info, please email me at scorpio_lady13@msn.com and I'll try to get it for you. If you can, please try to see them - the convoy participants have already traveled a long way, and the crowds and well-wishers that come out are what's keeping them going. Thank you all so much for caring about this! P.S. If you can, go watch them depart in the morning - it's truly exciting and they put on a real show for anyone who's watching.

More re the convoy

and yes, that is my husband being featured on the www.army.mil/convoy site - he's keeping an online daily journal and hopefully will be able to post more by this weekend as they have 2 days off in Fallon, NV. He's the only active duty soldier participating in the convoy (there are WWII, Korea, Vietnam-era vets, some who aren't vets, but love the military, even some soldiers from France who shipped over their WWII era vehicles). They all have interesting stories to tell; can tell you everything about their vehicles; and the "maintenance team" traveling with the convoy have to be the most intelligent, incredibly talented motor pool guys I've ever met.

Thanks MJ! You have email!!!

I will be at the Park Wednesday evening but doubt I get there for the arrival.

And expect to be somewhere along the route to Dugway.

Too bad my Ranger isn't drivable.... It might fit in...

Answer to your question?

Roger - I emailed you a reply; here is the text for everyone else:

Mark said they've changed the route of the convoy b/c of the military plane crash the other day. He says they are leaving Murray, UT and taking the Lincoln Highway towards Dugway and they refuel at Tooele just before they drive into Dugway, which may indicate which gate they are coming in. Mark says they don't even know what the gate is yet - it's being kept hush-hush; he advises calling the MPs on base for the information. Then they will leave Dugway & drive to Ely, NV.

Thanks Merri!

I expect they will be going out through Fish Springs. A few more unpaved miles. If I find out more tomorrow, I'll pass it on!

Thanks to Rook1 off Naxja...

Tomorrow, July 2nd...

From Murray to the 201 to Lakepoint, to Grantsville, up the old Mormon Trail to Rush Valley! There goes my viewing spot, now I'll be out on the Mormon trail. Across Johnson's Pass a little detour on the other side to actually hit part of the Lincoln highway, then through Dugway. There will be a detour, they will go south off Dugway then west to Goldhill, and on to Ibapa and then on to Ely, Nevada.

I got to Murray Park about 7:30 last night, enjoyed talking with some of the drivers. Ran into a couple friends and co-workers too.

This morning, they did stop in Tooele afterall. Since they had some miles added by the change of route leaving Dugway, they made up the difference by stopping in Tooele. Tooele County provided escorts as they left Tooele, and I got some pics as they were on the road south of Stockton. I missed about a third of them though, my 4 year old 5 MP camera is very limited with very small memory buffer. So I think since I have a ton of old Pentax lenses, I'll be looking at the Pentax D-SLRs...

I loved every honk and wave as they went by...

Pics are here...

Pay no attention to the dead skunk smushed on the road...

I'm glad I was able to meet and talk with some these folks, and glad I got to see them on the road, in the wild and not just in museums...
