Thanks to Brian P, I got up the urge to get my own trailer going; unfortunately, among my list of mad skillz, welding is not one of them. Sometimes in life you can get by with who you know more than what you know and I happen to know a very creative and talented fabricator: Marshall (P.H.O.R.) owner of Utah Powder Coatings (and forum sponsor).
The build got a quick start with this frame I acquired from another board memeber who had to bail on his build in order to keep the world safe for Democracy. It's an excellent platform to start and I got everything for $300.
I dropped the trailer off with Marshall last week and after some discussion about Phase 1 we decided the following is to take place:
The frame needs to be shorter. The box will be way too big if it fits the whole dimension of the frame as it sits
some welds need to be finished-off
one of the shackle mounts is FUBAR and needs a fixin'
tounge needs re-inforcement
make some pintle hitch mounts so I can be gangster
I am going down to his shop 7/5 to pay Marshall for Phase 1 and discuss more in depth Phase 2. He want's to build the box out of aluminum which scares me but we'll see what happens. He's building an incredible aluminum lid on a military trailer which can be seen over at expedition portal. It's strong enough to support a RTT an people but is so light you can pick it up with one hand!
It's my intent to post photos of the build along the way. I will say in advance that Marshall can only work as fast as my pay-schedule allows and this thread is no indication of his ability to complete a project!
