My Mac is sick, Any suggestions?

I did the check. I think the next step is like you said pull it off and start new. I am unsure at this point if I should continue. I think it is time to take it to a repair shop. I don't want to mess up anything.

First thing first, make a backup of all your important stuff! Put it all on an external drive if you can.

Other than that, I know nothing else about macs. :o

Boot from the original system disk by holding the 'C' key down. Once you are into the install screen follow the steps until you see an 'Options' button (should be the third screen). In the options menu choose 'Archive and Install'. This will preserve all your information, but do a clean install of the OS. But as Herzog said, back up any important data before you do that.

Once you have run an Archive and Install you will be back to the version of the OS that your MacBook shipped with (should be 10.4.8). You will want to run all the software updates again. That should solve any problem that you are having.

PM me if you have any problems.

I took it to school and it seems to work properly. I dunno, I think I will do snow leopard and call it good.

That is a good call. 10.6 is a huge upgrade over 10.4. Your bookstore would probably have a good price on it for you as well.
Allow me to reiterate one more thing, get rid of any anti-virus software. It's bad mojo!;)

....You could easily had a pice of hardware die after 4 years of use. No matter the hardware, life spans are 3-4 years...even though most people refuse to believe that. Beyond that, you can and will start experiencing hardware failure. Also, despite what most fanatics will say, any OS can stand a good reload after a few years of good use. If you haven't reloaded in sometime (or ever) I'd strongly recommend it. Backup your files and do a good clean install.

How much space do you have left on your drive? Right-Click on your hard drive and choose Get Info and see what it says you have available. OS X is horrible when you get down below ~10% of your disk space free. It needs extra space for swap and OS X defrags anytime you do anything that's 20mb or larger. So it needs the extra space. If you want to borrow it, I have a copy of Disk Warrior. It does the same thing as the Disk Utility but a bit better.

What!?!? You're telling people Mac's aren't magic computers that don't need any maint. The iReligion police will send the iSS to your door if keep spewing such iBlashphemy.

I know, as hard as it is to believe. :p

Granted, I will say they take far less maintenance than any Windows box :) Look at jdub's for example, he's ran his for the last 4 years without any issues. Rarely can a Windows computer do that...even if it is maintained properly :D

I just redid my wife's D620. It had four years on it. It even caught a viri about a year ago (nasty one---anti-virus 2008 or whatever it was)

Yeah, the reason I know so little about this machine is because I have done absolutely nothing to have to maintain it. I know there are great Windows systems out there but for my designing purposes I feel more comfortable on a mac.

I now have brought it back home and it is slower but I feel it is enough to not take it to a shop and have the newer software upgrade.

And yes the virus software is long gone. I had to do checks frequently on my last pc so it is habit. Never has any virus turned up though. I was getting desperate.

Now I know and thanks for the support everyone.

So back to my question are other computers hooked to the same connection slow also?

No, actually even wimpy netbooks seem lightning fast in comparison. There are probably 8 computers in my household. My ipod touch has become a better web surfing tool than my laptop.
