Need a I/M shop that is "4 wheeler friendly"

I bought RockRunner's Buddies CJ-7 and its a great Jeep. Now I need to get it inspected and registered. Anyone know of a shop in the south end of the vally that will pass a '86 Cj with a 97 cherokee motor and 35" tires and stock flenders?

It sounds like you should be in pretty good shape as long as it passes emissions for a CJ-7 (shouldn't be tough with that new of an engine). As I'm sure you aware, most shops realize they could lose their license if they pass any vehicles that shouldn't pass. I think if the tires are barely hanging out of the fender flares, you should be OK, but strict (and correct) is that the fender flares must cover the tires and you need mudflaps on the rear.

You just need to go to your favorite shop and have them do kind of a quick, visual inspection and see what they 'flag'. Address those issues and take it in for it's emissions/inspection and see where things go from there.

With my YJ, I'm making sure I have the flares covering the tires, mudflaps{removable is fine}, a newer engine than the VIN/Title complete with all the emissions gear for the engine of origin(vapor cannisters, cat, etc.), and it meets the lift laws.

It does have mud flaps but they are tiny vs. the tires. And I thought that the law concering engin swaps was that the new engine had to be the same or a factory option? I guess there could be a argument that the '97 4.0L vs. the '86 4.2L is almost the same engine

The law does allow motor swaps as long as the motor can be shown to meet or exceed the emissions of the original engine. When I called the state emissions folks they said that what you have and what I have (84 cj8 with a 99 4.0) are fine as long as the engine has all of its smog stuff on it. Another time when I called they said newer was fine as long as it was offered in that model in the same model year or newer.
It does mean that the engine will have to be smog tested at the counties test facility to prove that it meets the requirements to be following the law to the letter. If you find a station that will test it you shouldn't have any trouble passing the test. When I swapped in a 4.0 into my 86 XJ (which had the worthless 2.8 v6) the worst emissions test value on the 4.0 was 10 times better than the best number on the 2.8. The test station that checks my 86 only mentioned once that it had the wrong engine in it.

Good to know It has a new exhaust and cat so it should pass. Did you have a hard time getting all the gauges working after the 4.0L swap? I need to get the temp,oil,gas, etc gauges working.

I have all of my gauges working as they should and would be glad to show you how to do it. Stop on by some night if you live in or near Salt Lake. Alot depends on which wiring harness you used in your swap.

Back from the I/M. Emmisons passed but have to replace the windshield (its cracked), get the parking brake and rear brakes worked on (they barely work LOL), and take out the wheel spacers so the tires don't stick out as much. Not as bad as I expected

It's nice to live in Toolieville where they don't worry about emissions. I guess we can't compete against the chemical depot, Magcorp, and the smelter from Kenicott.
