Need advice on a reliable 4x4 DD for the wife

That's very optimistic, my wife's daily driver is a '03 4Runner with the same 4.7l V8 that's in the 100 Series Land Cruiser and it averages 16-17 MPG. I don't see how a much larger and heavier 100 Series will get better mileage.

I didn't believe it either, but I've read a few "real-world MPG" threads and that's what they said. Maybe I need to do a little more research.

I posted this in the other thread in support of the Subaru "Find a 3-5 year old Outback or Forester and call it good. No Jeep can touch a Subaru in reliability, winter driving ability, fuel economy, or safety. Plus they offer great cargo space, a perfect ride height, and can easily handle the dirt roads and mild camping trails in comfort"

amen

Subaraus are a good option. My wife has been in 3 accidents in 4 years. 2 were the other driver's fault (rear-end, and DUI), and this one was her fault. So, with that track record, I'm leaning towards something more tank-like. Like the LX470. But a Forester is not out of the question.

Ask your wife what she wants:D

This is what I did. My wife's vehicle is her's, she drives exactly what she wants. I drive exactly what I want. For her current vehicle, she chose a Land Rover LR3. A bit more than your price range, but it has been a very nice vehicle.

Just talked to the insurance, and they're low-balling us on our total. Looks like the price range is only $9k now. We looked at a few 100 series cruisers and loved them, but they're out of our price range now.

I like the idea of a forester, but they fetch a pretty high price here in Utah in the winter. hm... i wonder why :)

The trade-in value of your 4runner is just shy of $9k. So you're really not getting shafted considering that $9k is for a rig in 'excellent' condition; and the one they're giving you money for now has a V6 motor sitting where the radio used to be.

try and find a mint limited with 70k on the clock for $9k. I can't replace it for what they're giving me, so I'm obviously a little upset.

I understand that, but in all fairness they're are offering you what the market values the vehicle.

Best thing you can do is buy a beater for the money they offer you.. Drive that for a year or two while making 'car payments' to yourself.. Sell the beater and pool that with the payments that you made to yourself and buy something better. Rinse, and repeat..

X2 I had a Subaru while I lived in Alaska for a winter. I could go anywhere in that thing. I had good tires but they where just regular passanger car tires no studs or anything. Thoses things are unstopable!

9k is not a bad price to get anycar at i could find you some sweet deals steve on a subaru or other cars just tell me what your wife would want in her car and ill see what i can come up with i have quite a few connections i can tap

This is a perfect chance to get that tow rig you have been wanting just let the wife drive the taco now and you get to scoot down the road in a cummins..... sounds like a win win to me Or buy her a sweet 2009 cadillac CTS with only 30k on it :D i will make you a screaming deal LOL

I've had buddies with engine failures in their subarus. I don't know if it was the headgasket or what, but they've replaced them at about 160k. Are there certain models/years to look out for with known problems?

Not that I have any kind of dog in this fight at all, but I believe you should get close to REPLACEMENT cost, not TRADE IN. That's how it would work in a "non-total" situation. You can use the aftermarket parts to fix it, or you can specify OEM.
