I was just wondering what you guys thought about trading my set of Scout 2 Dana 44's with 3.54 gears and no lockers for an AMC 20 rear with 4.56 gears and a Detroit locker and a Dana 30 front 4.56 gears and lock-rite locker (both wide track). It would save me $1200+ in gears and lockers but I would be down grading in axle strength. What I am thinking is take the trade and wheel it until I can afford to buy and build another set of 44's or even 60's. Just looking for some opinions.

I was in your boat once upon a time. I spent way to much money building Scout 44's. Looking back I wouldn't do it again. Only because I now am starting over with one tons. Seems like I remember the 44's being wider the the 20/30. Will that work for you? Also, going in a scout, the caster will be wrong. The scout wants 0* caster and the 30 will have like 6-7*. That will make the scout hard to steer/ wander. The 20 is pretty much equal with the 44. Larger ring gear, but smaller, two piece shaft. Upgrade to a one piece chromo shaft and you are set. You may also want to weld the axle tubes to the diff as they are know to twist. Doing those things will give you a strong rear axle good for 35's.

I thought I had asked this before but I can't find it. Does anyone know the differance in width on these? I have searched and all I find is any where from 58" to 61" on the scout axles but can't find anything on the Wide track jeep axles.

I would trade for them, then sell them.Should be able to get a decent price out of them. Then find a pair of either 3/4 ton or better yet 1 ton Chevy's.Hell I will trade you the Jeeps axles for a 10bolt front(8lug) and a 14FF bolt.14 has no brakes and 4:56 gears. The 10 has 4:10s but I have a set of 4:56 for it.
