There are two cuts in the axle, one each for the retainer and bearing. They aren't really deep, but they aren't just real little either. I'm going to say they go about 1/16" deep, maybe even 3/32", at the deepest spot. Somebody got pretty dang aggressive with the cut off wheel, for sure.
Definitely not in the mood to replace it. Glad to hear two sides. I've wheeled it pretty hard since those cuts were made and it has held up so far, so I think I'll take my chances on not replacing it at this time. Hopefully, that works out for me...
