I had some body mods done on the CJ and now I need to get it repainted. I considered doing it my self with a friend but it seems to be getting to cold to do a garage paint job.

Just hit Maaco and Earl Scheib and they both want about $400 for a basic sanding and painting. I did not want to spend that much but it may be inevitable. Does any one know a good shop or a fellow RMEer that does decent work?

Thanks!
Jason

400 clams is dirt cheap, I just gave MAACO $1700 to repaint mine. If you want any cheaper, you're gonna have to bite the bullet and do it yourself. It's not that hard, and it's still plenty warm to get a quality job.

If you're not really picky on your color, visit Ebay. There's a guy on there from New Jersey that sells paint dirt cheap. Also, check Pehrsons and Auto Body Supply here locally for mis-matched colors that they sell dirt cheap.

[soapbox]WTF is with people, you spend thousands upon thousands for axles, tube work, tires, wheels, lockers.... and then when you want to paint something you want to spend 5 bucks.

I don't think I've ever spent less than 400.00 for MATERIALS ONLY on a complete paint job and I've been painting since 1985.

BTW, Jason this is not directed soley at you, this same topic and tight ass attitude seems to come up frequently when the subject of painting comes up.[/soapbox]

Ummmm...... Did you ever consider some or our paint jobs last 15 minutes? :-\

If you're just going to trash it, no sense in dumping big bucks into paint. If you're into crawling over speed bumps, bling it up dude.

That was my thought as well. Paint will not make it go any faster or climb any better or prevent me from breaking down on the trail. I'm looking for a decent paint job that will not fall off and will prevent rust and not much more.

I get TK1's point, its just a matter of priorities and allocation of funds :)
At this point I rather have a ok paint job and a cage then a sweet paint job and no cage.

Ummmmmmmm...... Yes I have, if you don't care then paint it your self. This has nothing to do with bling, it has everything to do with wanting someone else to do something for dirt cheap just because it isn't worth anything to you. Pick what you want to spend your money on but don't whine about paint costs because you don't want to pay for it.

You're right it won't help you do anything on the trail. That's not the point that I was trying to make. My point is, if it doesn't matter to you, go buy a cheap spray gun and paint it in your driveway. No matter how you slice it it will cost you more than you think it should.

tk1, I'm a ways off, but thinking about what I'm going to do here. Actually I'll have tube fenders on sooner than I think and will at least need some primer on them right away.

I would like a nice yellow and black paint job, and willing to do some work on it myself.

I have access to an air compressors and hose. My neighbor did a great paint job on a 23 foot boot, and he would lend me the paint gun he used on that.

Current paint job was a quick and dirty … seems thick and pasty … I assume I should try and remove it?

What do you suggest for:

1. air sander – type? Do I sand old off, or use some kind of paint remover? Any tips here?
2. what do you suggest for primer?
3. am I not going to be able to paint (a. primer, b. final) this in my garage in January (i.e. cold is bad)?
4. If I need to pay someone for a warm paint bay/final painting, do professionals frown on having the prep already done?
5. please give pointers on prep work if I can prep it and then get a professional to paint it.

would tk1 be interested in some work here?

Todd, your X has an awesome paint job. Something to be proud of. But I don't think you 4wheel it that hard. For a rig that spends most of it's time off-road in areas where scratches and dents are the norm, a cheap paint job fits the bill.
I feel like you're talking at me, one of the tightwads but my rig is totally thrashed and i'd like a 200$ paint job. Someone on here once said paintbrush...yeah actually that's starting to make sense to me:D What kind of automotive paint could be expected to stick if painted that way? Hmmm

Use a DA sander, to scuff the paint. You just need to take the shine off. Maybe 180 grit first, then 320 if you're going to do a quicky job.

Don't use rattle can primer. You'll get think spots and rattle can is tough to finish. Use a regular paint gun to apply the primer.

Yes, you need a warm place to spray primer or paint. If you prime, plan on painting soon afterward. People that drive around in primered rigs are begging for rust problems down the road.

No not you Ron, just in general, my truck is scratched to hell and I wheel it as hard as it will take. However, I don't really wheel anymore because it's not nearly as fun as riding my dirt bike. I stopped really riding when I got back into wheeling and when I started riding more again I wondered what the hell I was thinking. So I am now a web wheeler and proud of it, but I went out and rode my bike 50 miles on Saturday and it was a hell of a lot more fun than wheeling. ;)

Oh ya it only took 2 gallons of gas to do those 50 miles too.:p

I'd LOVE to find a place that can do a $200 paint job. Let me know when you find somewhere that'll put minimum $100 in masking materials, 4-8 hours labor to get the rig sanded, masked, painted, unmasked and delivered for $100 for labor and paint materials that will last longer than it takes to drive it out of the booth.

(FWIW, I bought the cheapest acrylic enamel system I could find for $60---I've got about $40 in sandpaper and primer at this point and I'll be spending $125ish or so to rent a paint booth. Probably another $40-60 in masking tape/paper when I do paint it. I'm doing this on the cheap $250-300 and using my own labor. Good luck and I'm interested to find the guy that'll do it for $200. My 'Jeep' will be there just so I don't have to do the work.)
