My BIL just baught an 80' CJ-7, I am pretty sure the front is a 30 and the rear looks like an AMC 20. His neighbor is pulling the motor on an 84 XJ, what axles came in the 84 with a 4.0?

Thanks in advance!

The xj came with a 2.5 four or 2.8 six cylinder motor. The axles will be a dana 30 up front and a dana 35 in the rear. The front axle is set up for coil springs and the rear for leaf springs.

and your better off keeping the axles from the cj7 under it... the ones on the xj are not as good...

Is it actually an AMC 20? How good is it? He wants to put 33's under it.

I have 35's on my amc 20 with solid axles. The ring and pinion are actually bigger than a dana 44. I haven't broken anything yet and I wheel pretty hard.

Cool! Thanks

That 20 will be just fine. Some say the tubes are too thin and will weld a truss. I've been running 33's on it for years with no problems. I did it for a while with the 2 piece shafts then went one piece shafts for added security. Granted, I am open in the rear. I've had a few broken U-joints up front(lockrite) in the 30, but I'm thinking I had a steering stop out of adjustment and binding the joints. Since I re-adjusted the stops no more breakage.

If you want to swap it there is a lot of info on the web, but that 84 XJ isn't a good donor.

Good luck!

The amc20 "cover" looks like a basket ball cut in half as opposed to the more diamond shaped dana35 cover. Just an ez way to tell at a glance. there is a couple of after market one piece axle kits for the amc20 that are stronger and they're not that expensive.
