New cell phone......I need two....Can someone help me?

Well it seems I'm getting screwed by Cingular in the sense that I have ATT phones. The contract I had with ATT says I get new phones every 2 years. I go down to ask for my new phones and they proceed to tell me that they'll give me new phones, but I have to take a decrease in service for more money per month. WTF?

Let me get this straight, if I went back on my contract when Cingular bought ATT, I'd be hosed. But it's okay for Cingular to go back on the contracts they aquired when they bought ATT? I don't get it.

Anyway, I was told that I can get new phone that are ATT ready that will take my Nokia SIM card and just keep my existing contract. I was also told to shop on Ebay for these phones. I would rather ask here and see if somebody from RME can help me first and keep the business local.


Anybody help?

I've got a Motorola V180 AT&T phone in good shape that will take your SIM card. I just started a new contract with cingular because I got a smokin deal through work. How does $30 sound? or trade for something cool

I say dump em and run. There are great plans out there with people like Verizon or T-Mobile with free phones and good family plans...you can take your numbers with you and dump those bung holes!!

Tempting....how old are these phones?

I have 2 Nokias. One is giving me problems and the other is like new. Maybe I can just replace the bad one for my wife and take her good one.

It sounds like you are still on the old AT&T TDMA system. If this is the case, you do not have sim cards in your phones. If you get a phone from someone made for the newer AT&T/Cingular GSM system, you will not be able to activate it without switching to that new plan and signing a new contract. Which system are you on? Tell me the model number from your phone and I'll tell you which you're on. You may be screwed.

I'm pretty sure it has a SIM card. I've been with AT&T for over 4 years. This is the second set of phones I've gotten without a decrease in service. Trying to get my third but not having any luck. I can't believe they're treating me the way they are.

The wife and I just got a new family plan with T-Mobile at Costco. We get 1000 minutes a month for $40. Nights and weekends aren't free, but mobile to mobile is free. We never went over 300 minutes combined in a month, so this plan is more than enough. We also got unlimited text messages for $20, which we use all the time since I'm in school and it's quick communication between us. As for phones, we paid $90 after taxes for two Razrs. But we get $85 back in mail-in rebates, so it works out great. Then I unlocked one of the Razrs and sold it on eBay for $120 and sold my wife's old Razr to her little brother, so I ended up making money in the long run. Catch all that?

Cliff Notes: check out T-Mobile. Hands down they give you the most minutes for the best price, but coverage isn't as good as Verizon. Then look at Costco for good deals on phones.

Yup, you are on the new Cingular GSM system. I can't really imagine why they would make you change your rate plan if you don't want to. They may require you to sign a new contract to get a good deal on a new phone, but you should be able to keep your contract. I guess there's a reason Cingular ir rated last for customer service... Cingular GSM phones are easy to come by. Get some from someone on here, or from Ebay or something. Then swap your sim card and call it good.

Same here. Verizon = Good coverage, I always get coverage at the U hospital vs. In-laws w/ T-mobile get it half the time. Plus with RockMonkey as my Verizon rep, myself and family members have always been treated great. My MIL was asked to leave the T-Mobile store she bought her phones at and threatened with them calling the police on her. Why? Because the manager that sold her phones to her originally said she could get free replacement phones. Went back a few months later with her phones out whack/broken and was treated like crap. T-Mobile blows monkeys, Verizon has the RockMonkey, enough said.

They may require you to sign a new contract to get a good deal on a new phone, but you should be able to keep your contract.

That's what I say. I've called them about 10 times and asked for my new phones. I have no problem signing on for 2 more years. I just don't understand why they are making me take a cut in service just because if I was a new customer the level of service I currently have is not something they offer. But if I keep my existing phones, I keep the plan that I currently have.

T-Mobile has two lines with 1000 shared minutes, free long distance, free roaming, free mobile to mobile, but I think nights start at 9:00. Free weekends, too. All for $69. I'm not pushing them or endorsing them, just letting you know what's out there. I just shopped around last month, so it's all fresh in my mind. A huge bonus for the wife and I is that pretty much all our family and friends are on T-Mobile, so they're all free to talk to.
