New Donation Option for U4WDA!

Should we be doing the General Fund or the Open Access Fund? I think it would help to gain more support if each fund had an explanation of how the money is spent in each. I am sure it says it somewhere else on the U4WDA site, but it would seem better to be there right on the payment page. That might make folks more confidant that the money will go where it needs to, or where they want it to go. I am an impulse buyer-type person, so that kind of info right there would make me pony up some more dough on the spot. Just my two...

Announcing the U4WDA Open Access Fund
By Seth Bowers

Earlier this year, U4WDA established a land use defense fund called the U4WDA Open Access Fund. The fund was created to provide financial support to legal action initiated by other groups and individuals working to protect 4x4 access on public lands in Utah. U4WDA is not and will never be a group that seeks to bring lawsuits against land managers and local governments. However, we do support legal action when it is absolutely necessary to protect historical 4x4 access on public lands.

Dan Jessop’s legal defense was the first recipient of a donation from the U4WDA Open Access Fund in support of the Canaan Mountain Sawmill Road case (see the summer edition of The Compass or visit www.u4wda.org). We sent a check for $1,000 from our new account to help pay for the recent legal bills that are quickly adding up in defense of Dan’s claim that the road was illegally closed by the BLM. This is an important case that must be won! The BLM is counting on Dan to run out of money before he can win and force them to officially reopen the road. The case is sound, and it will be reopened. But only if Dan has the money to keep it going. You can donate directly to this case, or to the U4WDA Open Access Fund by visiting www.u4wda.org/donate.

Unfortunately, it takes a lot of money to defend motorized access on public lands. Our enemies are very well-funded, and they have the ability to use their tremendous resources to force closures and lock us out of our public lands. We need your help to protect our access and save our roads. Don’t wait for your friend or your neighbor to get involved. Donate today by visiting www.u4wda.org/donate!

As much money as possible gets funneled into the Open Access fund. The general fund just gives us flexibility for purchases of items like T-Shirts and Hats that we can turn around and sell to add more to the Access Fund.

The Open Access Fund info is also on the land use page. The others are self explanatory (RR4W MUD Fund, Canaan Mountain, General Fund). Any place the money goes is good. If it's the general fund, it will probably end up in the Open Access Fund anyway, since operating costs are almost completely covered by membership dues and advertising sales.

How about getting some flex-fit type hats. I know most folks hate adjustable hats, and for $20 I'd like a nicer hat. I would wear mine all over the place spreading the word if the U4WDA hats were the flex-fit type :greg:. Here are some sights that offer reasonable prices for them:

The ones we ordered from China about 4 months ago will be much less expensive.

Thanks Teraflex!!

When have they given away stuff?

I would think a $5 hat would be worth the hundreds of dollars that people are contributing. It's good advertising, and there's no better advertising than word of mouth...

My opinion.....but stop giving so much stuff away for free and that'd help.

Often times a free t-shirt or hat is used as an incentive to get people out to service activities. While ideally people should do it because it's the right thing, getting something out of it factors in as well. I personally see nothing bad about handing out free stuff once in a while, it gets folks out and is promoting U4 when people wear the merchandise.

Why would we give you guys free hats? We already got your money :).

Just kidding. I think it's a great idea. We have other plans for the hats, but...

Anyone who starts a monthly paypal pledge before the end of the year (including you guys who already started) gets a free hat for every $10/month in the first month. So $10/month gets 1 hat, $25/month gets 2 hats, $50/month gets 5 hats. We won't have the hats until sometime in the spring (coming in bulk from China to save costs), but I give you my personal guarantee that you'll get one of the very first hats.

Brett, can you spread the word on that?
