New Jeep Club

I am contemplating starting a new Jeep (off-roaders) club through my employer. I anticipate some legal issues that would have to worked through, i.e. release of liability in case of property damage or injury etc, but don't really know what it takes to get this started. Any thoughts or pointers that you could pass my way?

Thanks,

Network with the U4WDA as they should have some information, bylaws and liability disclaimers they can pass along. If you plan to operate it parallel or in conjunction with your employer or associate the name, you would need to verify they are comfortable with it as well and possibly have their legal dept. sign off on the idea and disclaimer, etc.

Thanks Kurt. I'll reach out to U4WDA for further advice/recommendations.

I work for Intermountain Healthcare and with 30,000+ employees, we're bound to have quite the goup of outdoor enthusiasts ranging from Southern Idaho to Southern Utah. We could support fundraising efforts for Primary Children's Medical Center with show/shine events and other community related service projects, including trail clean ups. There could be a lot of good public PR resulting from the formation of the club, plus the name "Intermountain Off-Roaders" would just be cool. I know that I would have to get permission to use their name and that legal will have to be involved in order to mitigate risk. I'm just trying to get everything roughly organized in order to prepare a proposal that I'll have to make.

Anybody else have any other thoughts?

Invisible, on purpose!
Kurt's advice is a really good place to start! I would also check out Tread Lightly & The Blue Ribbon Coalition! They are associated with almost every 4X4 club that worth belonging to & should be a great source of info!:D

BTW: You should go for company sponsorship right from the start, if they say yes it's a super bonus, if they say no you have already warmed them up to the name recognition thing!:tara:

We just went through it with the Utah Bronco Club. We had a lawyer graciously donate his expertise. He's done it for several clubs and his help was invaluable.
Here's where we started:
Incorporate as a non-profit LLC, we went beyond that a little by going for a charitable status as well.
Very specific bylaws that require individual responsibility of all members. This will reduce the need for liability insurance.
We do an event every year (Bronco Safari, coming up this week) that requires insurance for the BLM and Sitla. For just it little bit of added premium we got the club covered for the entire year and all of our activities.
By the way, we started with bylaws from U4WDA, NAXJA, and Dirt Hedz, then they got carved up and re-shaped into something that hopefully will keep our club running in perpetuity.
Our bylaws are posted as a document on the Utah Bronco Club group facebook page. I'm happy to discuss it with you too, just give me a week or two.
