I needed a custom bikini top for my new cage (thanks Josh AKA Unstuck for the awesome job) and got this idea from another forum. Ordered a custom mesh shade from Shady Plains for $25 plus S&H. Great customer service and it arrived about 10 days later. Added two packs of bungee balls from Lowes, a little time, and I'm pretty happy with the results. Its a take off of Spiderweb shade but its custom fit and cost half the price. Only have had the jeep up to 45 MPH and it works great. Little flapping in the middle but it does not have the whoomp whoomp sound of a traditional vinyl top.

I was thinking about doing this for the 4Runner. Brian pointed me to a couple outfits that both wanted more than $100 to sew up a custom shade top. I like $25 a lot better!

Sugarhouse Awning wanted $180 and that was just for the rectangle of material and not grommets. My shade is a little more plastic like than I expected. I hope it lasts a while since its designed for outdoor use.

Lowes has this material or atleast the material I use. I think I paid $12 for my RZR one and I have one on the 4runner as well. I double it over for 2 layers and use zip ties to hold it in place.

If you really wanted it sewn, you could cut to fit then have a place sew it up for a few bucks.

UT410: Its holding up fine but spent most of the winter in the garage. Still tight and I can’t think of anything I'd do differently. I measured from the inside of the tubes just in case there was any stretch in the material. I saw the real deal Spiderweb mesh shade over the weekend and it is a nicer material if you were touching it constantly (smoother, slicker). For the price and the custom fit I'm very happy how it turned out. Your more than welcome to swing by and take a look if you like.

Update for UT410. Top looks the same as it did last year. It is in the garage year round which I’m sure helps. No stretching and no grommet tear out. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
