New to the region, and fairly new to wheeling

Hey folks, my name is Daniel and I just moved to the SLC area from the Twin Cities in the frigid state of Minnesota. I moved to the area to go to school at the U of U, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I've been anxiously awaiting the trails. I've been to the Gilbert, MN trail for Crawl for the Cure, and done some backyard wheeling but that about covers my experience. I tend to prefer quiet wooded areas with plenty of mud to big rocks, but I've spend some time playing around there, too. Enough about the life story, on to the rig!

I'm a Jeep guy through and through, but I can appreciate most makes and models. My current daily driver/weekend warrior is a 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ, 4 inch short arm lift from IRO back home, currently on 31 inch tires, but the fenders are trimmed to accommodate 35's if the budget fits. ;] Differentials are still open, still have the stock gears turning the wheels. 4.0L, automatic, and 215K on the clock, ready for another 200K. I am from north of the rust belt, so it's not the cleanest specimen, but I'm happy to have it. Once it is ready to be retired from daily duty, I'll be back in my 2003 Silverado, so give a wave if you see either one!

Hey, it was below zero when I left Minnesota, winter can hold off for as long as it wants. Although, I do love the snow.

Are there any nice dirt roads for a leisurely drive that I can venture down without getting my OHV endorsement? Had some complications at the DMV so it'll be a little longer before I get my Utah license.

Welcome

Hit Moab a few times you'll start to like rocks and the desert
I'm excited for EJS! I've got a few different groups I associated with back home that are heading down this year, so I'm sure I'll get out with them.
Welcome! Lots of area to explore around here, including some rocks and mud...well...sometimes mud...
Who doesn't like to get stuck every once in a while? If I can find mud, I'll roll in it like a piggy. I'll even oink for you if you pay me enough.

I avoid mud like the plague, it's fun but I hate the clean up
That red dust all over in my avatar is STILL on my Jeep and the event was in July... But I like it that way. As long as I can see where I'm going, I'm happy!
Exactly! :D
Head out to the west desert when it rains...plenty of mud out there to roll around in! No need to oink for me. LOL!
As long as someone comes to pull me out when I get stuck!

Mud is trail damage as far as I'm concerned. When the trails are muddy I stay home. You'll find lots of the land managers with FS and BLM will encourage users to stay off muddy trails. It's nice to wheel in an area where not wheeling in the mud is an option.

The west desert is full of dirt roads to somewhere or nowhere. You don't need an OHV tag to wheel anywhere in Utah as long as you're street legal.

Got it! That is something new to me! Thanks for the info.

what issues are you having? your jeep should be a normal vehicle not OHV? few experts here on getting around UT requirements.
Had no idea that even though I have a valid DL from another state, I still need my SS card and Birth Certificate, which I managed to leave at home in Minnesota.... So until further notice, I'm still a Minnesotan driver. My own fault for forgetting them, but a little frustrating nonetheless.

Guess your having issues with the DLD then ;) And yes they can be a pain in the ass, last time I renewed I had to come home after arriving and get my birth certificate and i've had a UT license for almost 20 years

That makes me feel a little better, still feel pretty dumb for leaving that stuff back in Minnesota though. Gonna have to trust FedEx to get it here safely, HA!

Found it interesting that a Leave No Trace campaign this year even encouraged us to keep our horses off the trails when they are muddy.

The biggest problem I see with wheeling and mud is when folks try to avoid the mudholes and go off-trail, thus over the years turning a two-track into a 60' wide mud pit.

Welcome to the group, Daniel! I'm glad you found RME, because it's the best "non-denominational" 4WD site for anyone in Utah. ;)

And don't worry--we'll get you falling in love with the rocks soon enough.

As long as the rocks stay in contact with my wheels rather than my roof, I think I'll be alright. ;]
