New trail in the 5mp area

naming trails after snakes is cool

Well, they got a whole system of trails named after hot peppers in New Mexico, so why not?

The way I see it, we need a place close to home where we can go play and test things. I'd give up 1000 miles of crisscrossing ATV trails and bullcrap if we could get a well thought out trail system with loops, out and back's, etc., all marked, mapped, signed, and adopted. I'm sure there are more areas we can find even better than this one; we need to find them quick before the 5mp area get's redesignated as open to existing routes and we can't find new ones.

The thing about contrictor, is that there is a bypass around the first part of the trail and because of that, every dip-**** in the world can get pass the beginning and they just move all the rocks out of the way the rest of the way up until there is nothing left of the trail. The end is difficult, but dip-shits ripped down the tree so there is a bypass for that forming now too. it's not even worth the drive--an hour to drive to get to a trail that takes (maybe)5 minutes now. We need to go and block some bypasses--and if not that, at the very least change the sign to rate it a 3 instead of a 5.

I agree that more trails would keep traffic down and hopefully keep the riff-raff off of trials that they are not set up for. I know of another trail that we ran last year, but for fear of it becoming constricterized, it has been kept fairly secret.

I would hate to see a trail be formed there if it really serves no purpose--meaning it just connects two roads but isn't difficult enough to warrent actually tearing up the ravine.....does that make any sense? If there are some obstacles that exist that would keep the trail difficult despite heavy traffic--i.e. rock walls, then thats cool. But dirt sidehills will just errode into a flat road after a season of use and that is a waste IMO.

I'll go pre-run the trail. I'm not worried about dragging my side accross the hill for awhile. If you guys head out there tomorrow, take some more pics and if you need a guinea pig, I'm down in a couple weeks.

I agree about fixing the first bypass. I think we need to do something fairly permanent though, and the only thing that comes to mind is drilling the rock, pounding in pipe, and connecting the pipes with cable (ie, guardrails.) That is what they used in Colorado on the Independence system. Enough of Constrictor talk on this thread.

Dose this look like your area? According to this map, the canyon is roughly 500yard long and about 200 feet elevation change. Sounds fun to me...

The way I see it, the BLM designated this area as open to cross country travel, so we should take advantage of it. My dream is to see about 20 4x4 trails, all named after snakes, in this area.

Just food for thought, all of 5 mile pass is not designated as open to cross country travel. They actualy have multiple designations for different areas of the area that also include private land. According to the manager of the area and the head law enforcment for the BLM there "are not" any official designated trails as well. Just telling you what they told me in person when I inquired about it. They also were extremely unsure of themselves as to pointing out what areas were what on a map. Food for thought.

That's because you're looking at the wrong map. The area this thread is concerning is in the open area; I checked :)

There are boundaries of the open area; it roughly goes from Manning on the east to Sunshine Canyon on the north, and the state highway/parking area on the south.

Dude, I'm not questioning the designation of the area of the "potential" trail. I'm questioning the direct and indirect comments on this site that "ALL" of 5 mile pass is open and that there are "official" trails.

Ok, gotcha. Yes, not the whole area is designated "open". (See my rough boundary descriptions in the last post.) What consists of the "5 mile pass" area anyways? How far do you go before you leave the "area"? When someone says we are riding in the 5mp area, what do they mean? (I'm not asking you, it's hypothetical.)

All sarcasm aside, I don't think that the BLM can even tell you that. Heck when I asked the LEO specifically about rattlesnake/Constrictor they had positively no clue what I was talking about. When I rephrased to Sunshine Canyon the lights came on.

Sorry about disapeering right after I asked... my net got nuked... it still is for that matter

I'm tied up for the next couple weeks, but after that I'm game to go run it on ATV.... I've got very limited access to net, but Wil_Badger can always get ahold of me.

I *think* I found what they were talking about. It's mostly just narrow dirt wash, and I mean REALLY narrow, and shallow. I didn't go all the way down because I didn't see any signs of anything cool, unless you think riding through trees and rubbing your knees on the sides of the wash is cool. Someone else had been down it on a wheeler though.
