Not something I get to work with very often but had this male 6-8yr old Bald Eagle come in over the weekend from 5 mile pass. Looks like he has been poisoned and then crashed and has two compound fractures. We were able to flush the poison out of his system and he is doing great now. We just did surgery today on his wing and pinned it. He is looking good so far but only time will tell. My wife will be running the booth in my place at the sportsmens expo this weekend while i stay with the birds at home. I have been with the blad almost every hour since sunday. When we tube him we have to hold him upright so he keeps it down and we do that every two hours, day and night. Anyhow will update you as it goes and hopefully have a release back to 5 mile in a few months. Dont forget to stop in at our booth if you go to the expo and say hi. We will have a few of our birds there again and bring the kids donations are a plus since this is all private money caring for the wildlife
check our website it is being put together now. Thanks

Holy hell man, that is cool! Bald eagles are very amazing birds, love to watch them hunt while flying over a river.

Whoever poisoned him needs to be strung up by the balls... :mad2:

Bald eagles are by far my FAVORITE wild bird. They are AWESOME! I really hope he will make it. I dont get to see these birds much anymore:(

It has to be cool to actually care/hold one. That would be cool

We are checking into make sure it has nothing to do with the chemicals from deseret chemical depot. We hope not but they are running blood samples so we can find out what happened. Also if the bird went down and was laying in the field when they sprayed for weeds that could have coused it also. We are hoping the lab in washington state university can narrow it down so we can prevent a future problem. They are wonderful birds and anybody that see's one in the wild cant help but stare at the beauty

Its amazing to actually handle a Bald Eagle, they are kinda fiesty tho! Why dont you see them much? Right now is the perfect season to go out to the north end of Utah Lake and see them.

As for birds being your favorite animals and you want to help we can always use it. If you want more info PM me

Its Kinda sad to say but in these pics he was all but limp and could barely hold his head. It was sad he was resting his beak on my hand to support his head. He came in weighing 8.4 lbs which is pretty small for him. As of tonight we have him eating on his own (kinda) I am placing the meat in my palm and he is taking it from me so thats a good sign. Now we are up against the infection and the wing healing with the pins we put in earlier today.

I always loved bald eagles and dreamed of seeing one when I was a kid... I never imagined they'd be all over the desert here! I've seen a bunch of them, and it's a thrill every time!!! (well not a BUNCH, but probably 10-12x over the last 10yrs).

I hope you're able to narrow down the source of the poisoning.. kind of doubt it's the Depot, but who knows. If it was intentional, I'd love to find the guilty and punish them.

I doubt it was herbicide poisoning. For an herbicide to be effective it must be sprayed when the target species is a actively growing, also most herbicide have fairly low acute toxicity. There are some exceptions like Gramoxone (highly acutely toxic) and preemegent herbicides are sprayed before weeds come up, however I don't think those would be used in the area of 5 Mile Pass. If it is from ag. chemicals I would bet it is most likely for someone try to control a rodent problem.

Speaking of broken limbs. How is your wifes limb doing? She had it in a splint or cast from the wreck you guys were in when I talked to you at the Outdoor Expo.

She is doing better still not back to work yet. She is out of the brace now but cant really move her arm to much but it will just take time. She is impatient and wants it fixed now now now and yep she is stubborn.

We are checking all angles right now. We have been in contact with the army and who knows what they spray out there. Plus they want to make sure none of the agents they are storing out there is getting into the ground water and contaminating the soil and fish. Fish are the main source of food for the Bald so they are very curious what caused this. We dont know exactly where at 5 mile pass he was found. Hopefully we will have the tests back in a week. As for post surgery his wing is not looking good and may have already died. Time will tell but he is a great bird personality wise and we hope he makes it even if we do have to amputate the wing he has a personality that will work great for education.
