I heard a rumor today and was wondering if anyone knows about how truthfull it is. I had one of my customers tell me today that since GM is now 60% owned by the government that they will only be building heavy duty trucks till the end of this year, and that the only pick-up you will be able to get is a half ton with the biggest engine being the 5.3. And that they were going to focus on more small, fuel effecient suvs and cars.

I predict there is no truth to that. Full size trucks are very profitable still.

I would have to agree, not only are they profitable but they are also completely necessary, not to mention GM would no longer provide any competition to Ford or Dodge in that market and I can't see the government doing that.

GM will not be providing Heavy Duty Trucks, like the 5500 commercial style.
They will still be offering 1 ton HD's as they are really a "light duty" truck

It's not about running the company any more efficiently than before, it's about grabbing as much power as soon as possible. The fed will dictate the type of vehicles you will drive and safety will take a back seat. They will inflate the prices so the UAW can get their money and with the help of the UAW, the feds will go after the non-union shops of Toyota, Nissan and others.
Many Americans are angry that these companies were bailed out with their money only to go bankrupt anyway, but most don't realize the damage done to our republic is far greater. Most Americans don't realize that the UAW became a major share holder because the Feds seized property from one group of Americans (the secured bond holders) and redistributed to another group (UAW). This has never happened in 230 years of our stock market. Secured bond holders always get paid first, hence the name.
If the Feds can do this to them, what's to stop them from doing it to you?

while the government take over of private companies is VERY concerning, and the government seldom does things well (keep that in mind next time you are polled on health care reform), I do think GM will need to stay in the truck business.

And note that despite dumping a number of brands (Saturn, Pontiac, Hummer), the kept GMC, which is truck/SUV only. It could not survive off 1/2 tons.

GM is being retarded. I'll never buy one now.

How so? Other than the lost brands, I don't think much has changed....yet.

I do fear that if the government does not sell its shares soon (I liked the bill I heard some senators tried-thus far with out success- to introduce that would give shares to the individual tax payers), that congress will try to meddle. That could doom the company quickly.

Otherwise, I think most of the changes that have happened are needed.

I have a friend that I have known for many years and he has always been a chevy guy. He has an 01 2500 with thw 8.1 and the allison trans. The engine was burning oil while still on warranty(under 30k on the clock) and the dealer says this is normal... WTF! The transmition that was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread is about as stupid as a loaf of whole wheat. If you put the skinny pedal down it will downshift, and usually downshift again because it is so dumb it cannot calculate what speed you are going and figure out what gear it should hit. Numerous other problems later and my friends who has always hated fords says he wishes he had a ford or even a dodge.

The situation with GM is a sad one but I see it as weeding the garden and we should have just let them die!
