Nothing

Nothing
Does it exist?
By calling it nothing it is now something. A socially constructed definition that can be understood consitutes it as something.

Even when defined as the absence of anything, or void of all substance, it is defined as something and therefore not truly nothing....

The concept of nothing is flawed. We can not truly conceive the concept of nothing.

So, it is now believed that the amount of information or "stuff" in the universe is fixed, and time (as we perceive it) is infinite.....so theoretically, given these two premises, every possible situation and occurance will eventually occur somewhere down the timeline.

That is to say, I will one day type this exact thing again, except I'll mispell something---or the background will be blue.....or????

;)

Exactly my point :D . Assigning the word "nothing" to anything makes it something because you can call it nothing.....Or something like that. It's all semantics. There can exist an absence of everthing in a given space, it's just not too likely.

So then how can we ever convey 'nothing' to another person. It must be assigned a word/sybol/etc in order to be communicated to another. Thereby it becomes something.... :-\

I knew I could count on you!
There may well be a fixed amount of stuff, but is there a fixed amount of definitions for this stuff? Further, if the definitions (social constructions) for said stuff change, is the stuff still the same or is it something new?

Bet Cody knows what classes I liked most ;)

Technically, there are lots of 'nothings'. All it has to be is something (flawed already :) ) that we have no idea exists, because anything that we are aware of is something....so wouldn't the things we have no awareness of be nothing, or are they still something....there is no such thing as 'nothing' ;) I love these types of things... :greg:

Well, the social construction stuff comes from Burger and Luckman, but the concept of 'nothing' has been dealt with by lots of philosophers. So, who knows where you're coming from ;)

Nothing is defined as the absence of everything, and by naming it it becomes something--and we are socialized to understand and not question the idea of 'nothing' through our culture. The same thing goes for abstract concepts such as love, hate, etc. which are don't exist physically, but exist completely through our social/cultural definitions (which are created culturally and through language). For example, we have only a few words to describe 'love' in English, however in Spanish and other languages there can be upwards of 50 different words to describe love all of which have slightly different meanings (many of which don't even exist in our culture).
