Chris: Passenger-side inner axle is a two piece with a sleeve operated via a vacuum-actuated shift fork. But that's kinda offtopic to this thread.

Lookee here: http://xjconnection.jtv.cc/dana30_xj.htm

Couldn't tell you how that's supposed to work with a locker in place, but you can clearly see that it's simply disconnecting the longer shaft and leaving the short shaft turning the R&P and driveshaft.

Just an FYI...when I had a cherokee with a disco 30, I couldn't enagage 4wd with the vehicle moving without some nice clunks and shudders. I thought I was breaking parts off when I did it ONCE.

I wonder if you weren't getting full vacuum to the shift motor? The only time I had trouble with mine was when there was over about a 5 lb difference in tire pressure between the two fronts. Must have been binding up on me.

Yup, you're right brad. But the short shaft won't turn the R&P. What's going to happen first? The drive side shaft is going to spin the spiders and rotate the pas. side inner in the opposite direction -or- the friction to spin the spiders and pas. side inner is less than that of the carrier, r&p, front drive shaft and chain assembly in the t-case causing all of that to ratate.
With a locked diff the driver side shaft would rotate the carrier and R&P along with everything else.

JF1, can you rotate your front shaft with the jeep in park?

Yep. Dang, just noticed I always forget to grease that zerk on the driveshaft.

(JF1 doesn't sound right, call me Joe)

Oh, I know I wasn't getting enough vacuum to operate the motor. I always used compressed air to unlock it after four wheeling

Mebbe the 229 in Brett and crimson's XJs did not have the syncro collar that the 231 has. Come to think of it, I don't think I could ever shift crimson's XJ (when I had it in HS) into 4 without some effort, even with the ignition off and the transmission in neutral. So JF1 was able to shift into 4HI due to the disco axle still rotating the R&P and front driveshaft, as well as a syncro collar in his TC.

My NP229 actually used a vacuum operated switch to put it into 4Hi. Does Chris's XJ have that little switch right in front of the e brake? As for the syncro, I don't remember it having one. I blew that T case up about 4 times too, so I saw the inside a lot
