SWEET!!!! I got to run the Crazy 8 trail with about 40 of my closest friends. (not really, but it was fun getting to meet new folk and renew acquaintances with old.) Sorry.....I have NO pictures, but there are some SWEET obstacles and optional lines. There was 'almost' some full body rig flop/rollover carnage a couple of times, but both were extracted unscathed. We had one rig with 33" tires in our group locked at both ends. Good driver and a great wheeler attitude. He had NUMEROUS clearance problems due too boulderage He had a great time, but used the strap/cable quite a bit (3 times that I know of and there's at least 3 other times he would have needed it). We chatted at the giveaway/dinner and it sounded like he wanted 60s to run some bigger tires. Seems like 35" tires are the minimum on this trail and bigger is better due to rock size (did I mention this is a fun trail?).
My Jeep drove off the trailer, to the trailhead, through the trail (took a winch once---FUNKY 6-7' vert wall that angles away from you ) back to the event and back onto the trailer all by it's little self. Successful trip, IMHO, and exactly what I needed. The PowerJoke is SWEET to tow with compared to what I've towed with before. I got just under 14 mpg towing on the way down (LOTS of traffic and speeds below 55-60 pretty much all of I-15 and then you're on the 65 mph highway......) On the way back I only got 11 mpg because the roads had less traffic.
Random Observations:
1)Craig Stumph and Dean Bulloch can DRIVE. Fun guys to spend an afternoon with.
2)Above persons rigs are SILLY capable on an 'everyday' trail----Craig brought his comp buggy and it looked bored, but I think he had a good time, Dean had an uberlow geared TJ on 39" Krawlers that was built nice and performed like you'd expect it to with Dean driving
3)I enjoy trails a LOT more when my junk isn't the broken one........I really don't mind helping other folk but HATE when I hold up the group
4) 5-6 psi in the SXs is about right and makes my Jeep go places in a manner I didn't expect (esp. with the lack of tread on one of the front tires----anybody got a 16.5 38 x 12.50 SX with some life in it?). The H1 wheels are awesome to have with the dual beadlock thing.
5) I heart rear spools.....
6)it's nice to not worry too much about breaking axle shafts (although, there are some spots you could break whatever you wanted too on this trail)
7)14 bolts can withstand TONS of punishment and not even whimper (Brett Davis-AKA Maverick had a rear tire jammed in a 'v' notch where it was getting about 4 contact patches worth of traction{sidewalls count, right?} and ultimately bound up pretty good. It looked like his rear spring and body were going to come off/apart, but the 14 bolt didn't seem to care a bit.
8)onboard welders are SWEET and quite useful
9)springovers are quite flexy--I'm pretty happy with my junk......now for some polish......
10)said 14 bolts are HUGE boat anchors
11)260 joints.....well, there's nothing other to say than they suck when paired with heavy Scrambler, a Chev V8 and 35" tires---{WAY Nice CJ8, though}
12)U4WDA had an AWESOME turnout so we had a LOT of rigs on the trail---but it was still fun with who was there
13)Hubs don't last long when they meet rocks as regularly as mine do.......They are tougher than I expected, though..... Time to buy some 'non-neckdown' Chev inners, I guess, and upgrade to the 35 spline drive slugs from Mt. Logan
RockReligious owes us some onboard welder tech.
BIG thanks to the Richfield club for hosting and I wanna see MORE trails similar to Crazy 8. AWESOME trail and perfect for the type of wheeling I like to do!
