Your most likely using the same apps I am. Adobe's CS3, right?

Yessir. Point is, I'm willing to bet we can do the same things. I like both operating systems, I'm just also a hardware junky too. I have OSX intel on vmware, a linux server in the basement, other flavors of linux on vmware, etc... It's all what you prefer now days, imo!

I don't know how to test the things I find better.

I know when I am working on the Compass I have:

Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Bridge, Acrobat, FontExplorer, FileMaker, iCal, Mail, iPhoto, Word, TextEdit, Safari, Firefox, Google Earth and Transmit all open and running. And never have an issue. I can't say that for our pc(s)

I just want things to work. And they do for me on the mac.

Edit: I almost forgot iTunes. Gotta have the punk rock a-blaring

One thing that would speed me up on a PC is... How to you do a screen shot of a given area? i.e. Just shoot this post.

I use that a ton on my mac.

www.shup.com - cool utility that a friend of mine developed.
You can set hotkeys and crop, blur, draw, type, etc... before you have it automatically upload to an image server of your choice.

Also has a shell extension, right-click upload photos instantly. It's pretty handy, I use it daily. And it's freeeeeeeee!

Closest I know of is Alt + PrtScn which will do whatever window you're on.

A well setup PC can handle that same load. I think a lot of the problems with pc's and peoples experience with them is that there are so many piles of junk out there put together with cheapo parts, that of course will crash a lot and not run well.

Here's a screen of some things I have open. I opened up a few extras like indesign and google for comparison. I also have vmware running 2 operating systems at once (ubuntu w/ a browser & console and win2k3 server fully operational).

Resized, of course...

Another question. Does XP have a scripting program like Automator? I have really got to know that program as of late and I love the ability to automate redundant tasks. If I can do that on xp with emailing invoices, backups and such that would be great.

I know there has to be lots of little freeware apps like the mac has.

No idea... but that would be handy. Let me know if you come across one.

-edit: scheduler can do simple backups, but it's pretty limited.

Here is a workflow I have used recently.

All of the U4 clubs calendar info is on a google calendar. I subscribe to that calendar in iCal. Since that calendar is shared across all of the iApps the dates show up in calendar layouts in iPhoto. I added some images (drag and drop) and printed the calendar to a pdf file. Then opened the pdf in InDesign and placed it for printing at a press.

Stuff like that is a great time saver. I don't need to build a layout and no need to type redundant information into the dates.

I think I got a fubar machine. It froze solid when I was first setting it up. And it has gone downhill from there. I am hoping moving to xp will fix some of the issues.

What brand of system did you get? If it's a Dell, I have several OEM discs that you can have for cost of shipping... I used to have COA's, but I have no idea where they are at now (haven't seen them since the move a year ago).

Try a fresh install with the OEM disc that came with the system.

The only Quickbooks version that is Vista compatible is 2007 - not sure if you knew that or not.

....Alll of this said, I'm still on XP Pro. :D I have a copy of Vista that came with my Dell laptop that I'm not using.

Everything I've heard about Vista has been negative, so I'll hold onto XP Pro.

As for screen shots of selected areas, I've used Snagit quite a bit with very good results. At $40, it's not expensive and they have a 30-day trial version you can try out first.

Brett, you no longer need to press "Alt" when using the Print Scrn function.

another tid bid about mac. they ditch there core os in favor of a unix based one. talk about being creative ehhh? regardless, best thing they ever did which enable them to run on intel and amd processers just like pcs.

Apple has some innovated thinking, but that dosen't mean thier software is any better than what M$ puts out. More people use M$ and therefore more bugs come up, and on top of that more people target M$ products.

Anyhow, like I said, if your machine is older don't go vista.... I tried, it does suck. But a new machine and vista will run stable. It's very different than XP and that's why peope don't like it. They will come around. It's the future, especially vista 64. Posting on a vista 64 machine now. ;)
