Oil Leakage on Trail

Really haven't been around a computer today and it's probable to late now to post this but I will anyways.

I was up along Skyline drive today with some friend taking the backway to towers on the Farmington side when we came across a POS Ponatic Sunfire along the route that takes you around the Farmington Flat area (theres a sign that says not recommend for passenger cars or trailers).

We'll apparently the boys (3 of them) went for a joy ride about 3am last night to see how far they could push their car and when coming back this morning they puncture the oil pan on a rock and left a nice puddle of oil on the ground and about a 10-15 ft line of oil.

We checked to see if they needed any help but they said they had someone on the way to come get them. When we come back about hour and half later they had move the car a little more and were still waiting for the person to come get them.

With it being so late now would it do any good to go back up with a spill kit to clean the mess up? It probable been riden though by atv and dirt bikes by now.

When they pull their car out they are going to rip the bumper off and who knows what else. At least that was our thought.

I think that if there's still oil there, then it's worth cleaning up. How big was the spill? A quart, or 3-4 quarts? It might be a good opportunity to help educate a few people about treading lightly.

Props to you for wanting to clean up a mess you didn't make. I need to carry a spill kit in my truck 24/7, not just when I go wheeling...

Bountiful PD and Davis County love punks like them, I would have grabbed a plate number and made them learn about responsibility the hard way.

I'm sure its worth cleaning. I still have a few bags from npld, and a showel. If you go up, shoot me a next and see if I'm available to help.

definitely worth cleaning up.

I hope someone told them their responsibility regarding the oil spill. If they didn't seem to care, I'd do what ZJ said and get their plate #.

If I do make it back up there it probable won't be till after noon. If I do make it back up there anyone willing to come along?

Ya, we should've gottern the plate number. The only feasible way they probable could've gotten it back down without tearing everything up would have been to drag it down to the way gate and have the shierf's department or forest open the gate to allow them to pull it though to the other gate then up on out.

If it's still there when you get there, snap a few pics of the vehicle, the oil spill, and the license plate. Hopefully they've removed the vehicle and cleaned up their oil spill, but sadly that's not the norm.

kids these days, hell i used to do stupid shit like that.. but i always cleaned up what i messed up.. i always felt bad when i get a small oil leak on a trail... i member a few years ago i was up smiths reservoir up lake fork and someone changed there oil in the mtns and they left all the oil up in the trees i was so pissed. i hauled it out it makes me mad that they do that.. this spring my brother, mom, si in law, and brothers best friend came across a camp ground that they people left alot of things there 5 car batterys, a nice ax, a tinning hammer, a pic-fork, alot of tent stakes and bungee cords and rope. they even left a full bag of briquets and a stove... we watched them load up then leave by the time we got over to their camp they was gone.. i tried to chase down the lifted blue avalanche but they was gone! :( no plates... thanks to them i made 15 bucks off the battery's!!

once again, great work. I hope a lot of people see this thread and realize what they can do to leave the trail better than when they found it.
