Thought i'd add my experience with some "expedition" type modifications as well. BTW, I love this new category Greg!

OLD MAN EMU for 1999 Toyota 4Runner Highlander Edition

I purchased an Old Man Emu lift kit from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters around May of 2008, and installed it with his help. Well, I was there to assist him in installing an ARB bumper on an FJ Cruiser, and he gave me advise/pointers as I installed the OME lift. Kurt helped greatly with his knowledge and expertise in the install, and having the press right there for the front shocks/coils.

I went with the OME 882's & OME 890's, which I believe are the heavy duty coils. The ride supplied by this suspension is incredible. The factory coils were not bad, and actually were the tallest coils ever put on the 3rd gen 4runners (99 Highlander Edition ~ Pre "Sport") from the factory. However, the OME system is dialed in, and engineered to feel comfortable on the dirt roads at speed, navigating the rocks, or even the parking garage... This is a sweet suspension.

Looks real good Jason! The Toyota IFS really shines when you add a OME suspension. Glad you like the new section, we should have done it long ago.


Our '99 4Runner also had a OME suspension and that thing was great. It handled some bouncing around down in Baja very well. I know I've posted this before, but it was too much fun. *Caution* May make you sick... handheld camera bouncing around. :p -

Nice video Greg. The very short time I've had my OME lift, I've loved it haven't gotten out on any trails yet though. Just the ride around town is so much better.

It's been a great ride through the dirt for sure. It spends it's days hauling kids around for the time being... But, atleast the speed bumps mean nothing anymore ;)

I should be able to hit May, June, July, and August runs.

ARB better hurry up with that damned Xterra bumper.. That way it's more of a 'legit' customer rig. -_- ARB pres told me 2-3 months this week.

Keep an eye on your email, a few of the fall ones will be very limited size wise but very special on the same hand. Think Ophir style :D

Did you have to do any modification to the CV joints, or any of the drive line?

Thank you. I just picked up my 4runner and went out. Once the bottom rubbed as I crest a ridge.
Suggestions on were I can get a skid plate? The 4runner is a 96' 3rd gen.

32-33" range or metric equivalents. Width will depend more on the wheel selection. I run the 32's on my Tacoma with the same front lift, 33's will fit but will require more fender trimming for full up-travel.

I rode in Jasons 4 runner with this lift and wanted to buy it. In fact, I called him to buy the 4 runner the day after he sold it to someone else. This lift kit rode super amazing. I would say it is the perfect balance between sport feel and cushiness.

If I was driving a toyota then old man emu would be the lift I put on. I would buy it from Kurt at cruiser outfitters. Great quality parts and extensive knowledge of the platform get my vote any day.

Kurt, does OME make a worth-the-coin lift for the early 90's Toyotas, or is the torsion bar IFS hopeless? I looked at some long travel kits that use t-100 CV's but I don't think I want to get that crazy.

I'd be willign to sell my rear OME springs and struts if you'll give me your old ones. I'm going to be sellig the vehicle, and it doesn't make much sense to sell it with half an OME lift. It won't raise the value much anyway.

They do, it is replacement Torsions, front shocks & rear coils/shocks. The front end will be too stiff (using OME coils) unless you have a good chunk of weight (bumper/winch/etc). If not, run their front and rear shocks, rear coils and ball-joint spacers on the front. Its not ideal (torsion) but its a fair setup and works as good as any for the budget. Oddly enough Toyota went back to the torsion bar for the 100 Series Land Cruiser and it works great though its a much, much longer bar than the 86-95 setup.
