Old wood? Where to find?

I need to make a sign for an upcoming 4x4 event, thinking of carving the name into an old piece of wood. What I'm looking for is something ~3' long and 6" high, 1/2" - 2" thick. I want it to have a western look, something with some character, knots, uneven edges, gray color, etc. An old roof plank or fence slat. I've seen so many over the years that would work but can't think of where to grab one now that I need it. Any thoughts???

What I've done before is go drive through a more "cowboy" city such as wallsburg, cedar fort or kamas and there are ooodles of old barns that farmers use to store their hay.... Talk to the farmer and see if you can pay him $10 or somethin for a few peices that have fallen off or that he just may have extra or whatever...

I assume this is for the Relic Run. When do you need it by? Next time I'm up in Heber I can grab some from the barn up there.

Actually this is for a different project (San Rafael Swell guided trip I'm leading)... but I would love to make one for the Relic Run too. I've been brainstorming ideas for that one also.

All along the shores of the GSL you can find some real old, real nice stuff. Especially up around the western shores near the causeway. We fished a HUGE log out of the middle of the lake years back for my boss, he used it as the main beam in his house he was building. Most of the wood you find out there on the lake is from the old original wooden causeway.

Kurt, me and my dad have a few piles of old barn wood, probably exactly what you're looking for., If you're still going to EJS, call me on Monday or Tuesday and remind me to grab you a couple slats.

Trestle Wood I beleive bought the purchase rights and have salvaged most of it?? We've been out there a couple times in the last few months and I didn't spy anything... though of course I wasn't needing any then :D

I have a friend that makes old signs, bar tables, frames, etc out of old wood, he hooked me up with a couple slats that will work great. I'm letting them dry out in the garage before I start building. I'll post some pics soon.

Sooo... when do you need it by?

I can probably dig something up this weekend. I'm down in Ephraim, and have access to old barn wood. LMK

Covered but thanks guys. I'll keep it in mind if I end up needing some more

Interesting, it was only a matter of time before someone did it. My boss had talked about creating a company that did just that (he has many companies; fish farm, brine shrimp, law firm, boat repair, etc). I wonder how long they have been out there?

Michael Slade would know for sure, he has been out to their facility in the past. They do have a neat history write up on their site: http://www.trestlewood.com/story.jsp

 that's an awesome history lesson there. Interesting that they are operating under the Trestlewood name, that barge in the story belongs to the largest brine shrimp company (Inve Aquaculture who's parent company is in Belgium) and they have the sole rights (besides the rail road companies) to the causeway. So that all makes perfect sense. Boy, that's all a flashback down memory lane
