Overheating Issues

It is probably the fan clutch. With those type of clutches they always spin but they don't engage all the way until the temp gets up. The clutch is probably not ever engaging all the way. I had the same problem on my truck and replaced the clutch and it has been fine.

x2 would not hurt to change the thermostat as well. But I think your problem is the fan clutch

fan clutch is bad. It's not the thermostat, so don't mess with it.

If a thermostat is stuck open/closed, it will either never warm up or it will not cool off when driving.

If a water pump is bad, your heater will not work.

Since it's all good when you are moving and your heater works great, then that tells me both the thermostat and water pump are functioning as intended.

Go to your Jeep dealer and buy a new fan clutch. IMO I would not mess with an electric fan.

Fan clutch should be tight to turn when the motor is cold. It should also make the fan noise loud when first started. As your motor warms up, the fan will get quiet. When it starts getting warm, you should start hearing the fan noise come again.

Also, a bad fan clutch will have oil residue on the outside of it - typically speaking.

EDIT:
Also, remember that the threads are backwards ;) It shouldn't take much oompf to loosen it....So if you are having to put a lot to it, then go the other way ;)

I would do the fan clutch also. When your driving the speed of the mechanical fan does almost nothing compared to the air flow on the radiator. When you stop the mech fan does the cooling.

So you're thinking that the clutch is allowing it to spin but not engage all the way then...just not spinning fast enough at idle? Should I still worry about the thermostat? I was just on my way to the store to get one and try it out.

As I said, change the thermostat. Regardless if it's the main culprit or not, it is likely the original part and needs replacing soon anyway.

When I turn my jeep on in the morning it does seem louder and after about 45 seconds the sound tapers out and gets quieter. I guess I'll go get a fan clutch then. Anyone done one before that they can tell me how to replace it?

It's threaded onto the water pump. So unthread it and then unbolt the fan. reverse procedure. LIterally that easy. But if you like, I'm sure I have some actual instructions taht I could email you. PM your email addy....

I just don't remember which way it turns to come off... I want to say counter clock wise?

Oh, so just hold the belt/pulley from turning and use a large crecent to unbolt the clutch from the water pump. I used to use a larger screw driver between the block and pulley to hold it still.

Did you buy your Jeep lifted and do you have a repair manual for it yet?

Thanks for the help Wayne. I just found some instructions online and it is pretty much as you described. Here it is if anyone else needs it.

Yup! Good directions there...

When you put it back together, just snug up the fan clutch to the water pump, don't over tighten it or you will have a ***** of a time getting it off in the future. The threads are opposite of the direction it turns, so technically speaking, as the motor turns, it's tightening the fan clutch/water pump and won't come off.

And just to be clear, buy a genuine Jeep fan clutch. The Autozone/Checker ones aren't made to the same tolerances and even though it's new, could still give you the same results you are having now. Causing you to look at other things as possible issues.

So that's the hardest thing I've never done. Lets start out with I got one from checker before I read your guys posts. It's okay though...I drove to checker, bought a fan clutch for $47. Not a bad price. I knew I would need a fan wrench but I was hoping I could get away with using a normal adjustable wrench. The fan wrench was $28 and nonreturnable cause it was a clearance item. Came home, tried using the wrench but couldn't get the nut loose. I thought it was because I wasn't using a fan wrench. So since I didn't want to buy the nonreturnable one from checker I drove to auto zone. They had a set for $55 that you rent and when you return it they credit you all the way back. Sweet!! Got home a little while later got the wrench out of the case...no dice. Not even close to fitting. It was way too big and it was the smallest of 5 in the case. So needless to say, I got nothing done but got the fan shroud unbolted. But since I need the jeep tomorrow I had to bolt it all back up.

To look on the bright side, I can now return the fan clutch to checker and head to jeep tomorrow and buy an OEM one. Then I'll return the Ginormous fan wrench kit and head to my buddies shop and hopefully get it done. I thought the shroud was going to be the hard part. HaHa. I was wong!

I bought my jeep already lifted but I have since changed everything about the suspension. Why do you ask? I also have a repair manual but we're in the process of moving to a house that has garage room enough for 2 cars and a project :), so it is packed away.

Get the air hammer attachment one, I can pop the clutch loose in a couple seconds with those

Swapping the fan clutch and thermostat are easy compared to suspension work, and I have a spare manual that I may never use.

large crescent will work just fine. What are they at HF? $20 for 3 different sizes? lol

DANG! The dealer will want ~$190 for their fan clutch 52027883AC. For that money, I'd try the $47 one :D

We already know the fan clutch is the issue. So if the $47 one doesn't work, you may have to try another. I've heard of people going through 3-4 before they found one that functioned correctly.

Keep in mind that loud fan noise you hear first thing in the AM, that's the same noise you should be hearing when the engine is running hot on the gauge - 220+ for sure.

I tried a large crescent wrench. And I tried hitting it with a hammer to get it going and it just turns everything attached to it. Ya, I think I'll try the $47 one and see if that does the trick. I didn't know the fan was supposed to be loud like it is in the morning. I haven't heard it kick on loud like that during the day for a long time.

I'd do the thermastat and the fan clutch at the same time. The fan will still spin with a bad fan clutch, just not near fast enough.
