And if you don't recognize the location... it is the CLOSED bypass at the rockgarden, if you look to the background of pic #1, you will see the deadfall and rocks these guys managed to navigate...

Pic# 2 is the guy going back out (the way he came in) after we refused to allow him to continue on his path. He later tried to take my camera (that was gonna happen  )

:mad2:

The same bypass that we planted trees in, 2 years ago!! If I were there, I would have started throwing rocks. What an ass!!

I like the idea of posting pics of offenders. -_- Good for you for standing up to those idiots.

Who wants to go up to the Rockgarden and work on permanantly blocking off the bypass??

We are working on finding a date with the USFS that we could do some more work on this one as well as others... Forest Lake Trail needs some attention, as do a few other areas...

Stay tuned... and until then, make sure you don't end up on another addition of...

OK, with educated OHV users stepping up & trying to inform the un-educated, what's the best approach to tell someone that they are screwing themselves and others by their actions?

I know it's a difficult thing to get the guts to tell someone what they are doing it illegal, as we've heard about shmoesmiths encounter and Kurts story, here. I'd imagine most of the people on here are passionate about keeping the lands we have and in trying to keep our emotions seperate when discussing the offenders actions, but what is the best dialogue to use when educating an offender??? What's the best approach?

In my mind, I think something like this may be the best approach-

Approach the offender with a good attitude (& a smile, if you can)... stop them in their tracks if you can and ask them how they are doing, try to get to know them a little. Once you get them talking in a friendly manner, ask them if they are aware that what they are doing is considered illegal & contributes to the very trails you both are on, to being closed. Ask them to kindly stop what they're doing & help spread the word to their friends.

That's what I think is the best approach... if they are jerks, it's understandable. Nobody likes being corrected when they are doing something illegal. Any other ideas?

I was thinking about carrying a rubber chicken around and beating offenders about the head and shoulders when I caught them.... :D

j/k...I think Greg's approach is an excellent way to try and let people know what is happening.

Looks like you suffer from the same syndrome as me... "could care less about your sorry excuses" syndrome...

Approaching them is a difficult subject...

EX# 1, the afore mentioned 4 Wheeler guy... I approached him angry... :mad2: But only because this was such a blatent disregard for our trails.. he immediatly fired back with excuses, justifications, etc... I shoved some much info, facts, laws back at him, his head was spinning. I systematically shot down every one of his weak excuses... Why becasue I have chosen to become educated on the laws & regulations concerning our trails... and really it is a simple thing to do (and most of RME'ers/other clubs are already in the "know"). I'm sure there were plenty of vulgarities used, and my personal comments to him wern't always needed.. I will improve on that.

EX# 2, was a little more disturbing. The Bronco was in a group of well-built rigs, D60's, lots of tube work, full-width, and older wheelers (I would guess late 20's, early 30's).. They all watched as the Bronco busted through the lake... I approached him after watching him in the lake twice... Nicely informed him that it was against the law and he would be cited if seen by USFS officials, he was quite receptive to some extent, but mostly was done talking to me and ready to head back to the trails...

I guess we'll see what EX# 3 yields...

Kurt, I'm not trying to bust your chops over your approach. Anyone that makes a stand about proper land use is doing the right thing. ;)

As I said, I'd probably be tossing large rocks his direction first. My own comment made me think about what it would take to change how the offender was behaving/thinking, hopefully long term.

Well i was there and they just couldn't wait for kurt and i to get up the rock garden i aproached in anger anyelled and threw up signs ;) and there response to me was "well i guess so" they didn't like us takin pics of them tho.

yeah, this is one of the pics we got of one of the groups of people cutting through the bog at forest lake....didtn get any of them in the water though..as you can see from the size of the group, part of the problem is getting out numbered :(
