So I have a question about pay pal. The wife is selling a ring on ksl. she gets an email from a lady asking about it. My wife responds to the email. The lady rights back and says she would like to purchase said ring, and will put the money in her paypal account and wants it shipped one day. it's a lot of money and we haven't really dealt with pay pal much. if the money is in her account then it is good to go right? or is there a way to scam through paypal? she claims to be from out of state.

so what do you guys think?

My understanding is once it's in your account she can't get it back without a whole investigation taking place. I've had good luck selling less valuable things this way, but that would still make me a little nervous. Does the email sound like it was written by a Nigerian?

she said the email sounds like it is a woman that is not of the niagerian race ;) she also gave a phone number but she didn't answer and the mailbox was full. which was odd to me.

In my experience if paypal says the $$ is there it is there. You will want to wait till it is for sure there and not just pending. Also paypal has buyer protection which will allow a buyer to dispute if for example you did not ship, etc. Just make sure to keep all receipts, delivery confirmations, etc. (electronic copy is fine) for a few months.

The Next Day shipping is what would scare me, since it seems like she wants to get it in her hands before you can figure out she screwed you.

I'm not familiar enough with Paypal to say for sure in this case though...

Make sure the payment clears in paypal before you send it. It's possible for a person to send a paypal payment in a form that takes up to 3 days to clear. If you sent the item before it clears you could get screwed.

In fact, write back and tell her that you will send the item next day as soon as the payment clears. If she is ok with that then you should be fine... if she's not, find a different buyer.

She might want to make sure she gets it before Christmas but there is still plenty of time for that.

Paypal is secure but thieves will always find a way. Once the payment has cleared....its yours tho

I'd say it's good to go, just remember to tell her to send the money via Personal and Money Owed, otherwise PayPal will charge ~3%.

The one thing to keep in mind is PayPal has a $500 a month withdrawal limit unless you are verified....and I think there is something else, but can't remember. I figure it might be something you should check into.

I have been getting some emails from people wanting to buy my stuff and wanting the sale ad removed immediately, and they want it shipped 1 day as well. They are willing to pay me more than I'm asking, and they want to do it through paypal. I don't know how, but there is probably some way they are doing this.

What Shane said, make sure it says completed in your account before shipping. Also, always ship with a trackable service (ie, I'd avoid the USPS, their tracking sucks) and require a signature. Let her know that this is the terms. Also the Next Day wouldn't scare me since, IMO, it's the smartest way to send Jewelry since it has less time to get lost. Also, make sure you include insurance for the replacement value.

ok so the latest and greatest. The money is shown as pending in her pay pal account. she told them again that she will not ship untell the money is in her hand. The buyer said they need to get it shipped asap so they can get it to there friend in Africa. Every email sounds like a different person. Kind of weird

I'd personally send an email to the paypal fraud team (I think it's fraud@paypal.com or something like that) and ask them their thoughts. Just because they are sending it to Africa doesn't mean it's a scam (good indication though). It could be that they have hacked that account and are spending money that's not there. I've received A LOT of money for my personal business on paypal and have never been screwed. Just be VERY cautious.

she called paypal and they said that there is no money in her account. the buyer sent her a fake paypal email stating that once the item has been shipped she will have to give them a conformation number and then the funds will be released. Its a scam...
