PC Laptops really does love you

PC Laptops - Good in 2007, Not in 2010

I am a very demanding customer. I have high expectations. Almost always, Utah companies fail miserably at meeting my expectations, especially when it comes to customer service.

I will say that so far only these companies have met my customer service standards:
Big O Tires in AF
Six States in Orem
Rocklogic 4x4
Teraflex
4WP
Cruiseroutfitters

I might be leaving out a few (I'm SO tired!), and I haven't dealt with EVERY company in Utah so don't feel bad if I didn't include your business.

I've been in the market for a new laptop lately, and doing a lot of research online. Today I went to a Best Buy and Compusa to get a hands on look at a few particular models. On a whim, I went over to PC Laptops in Orem on State. I had looked at their website, and thought it was designed by a high schooler. But I thought I'd check 'em out to see if they did have "the best laptops on the planet."

I walk in, and every employee screams, "Hello!" They do that for everyone, not just me. "I like the gimmick," I think to myself.

So I start talking to a salesman, and telling him my incredibly high requirements for a laptop. He asks if I'm familiar with their products.

I say, "Not really. I went to your website, but it looked like a kid made it."

"Well, we are glad to take specific suggestions," he responds.

I say, "Well, you can pay $150/hour like everybody else."

I can see that the store manager is overhearing this, and not appreciating what I'm saying. But, since I've already mentioned that I'm looking at laptops in the $3000+ price range, I assume he'll let my insults slide.

So two more sales guys come over to help my sales guy (he's new, but very eager to be helpful). They take me to the back of the room, and start showing me the options and pricing. After much discussion, I determine that the PC Laptops product I'm interested in is a new model that should be available any day now. I tell them that I'm heading out of town for 10 days tomorrow. The new model is the same as an existing model in terms of components and performance, but the only difference is that the new model has a 17" WUXGA screen instead of a 15.4" WXGA screen. So they tell me that they'll sell me the existing model, and then give me the new model when it comes in for the small price difference in products.

"Really? You'll setup a laptop for me, knowing that I'll be returning it for something else?" I say.

"Sure, we do it all the time," responds the sales guy.

"And you can do it today?" I ask.

"You bet, we'll have it built and tested by closing time today," they say.

So I'm haggling over price, trying to get the "daily special" in addition to two other specials I've already talked them into. I end with about 15% off the regular price. Maybe they do this for everyone, and build the discounts into their pricing structure?

So I pay, sign the paperwork, and head home.

They finally call around 7:30 to let me know it's ready to pick up. Sure, that's a little later than I hoped, but what can I expect?

So far, I'm pretty pleased with the performance, and the features. I think PC Laptops is a business that really lives up to their mission of "making every customer incredibly happy."

So, if you're looking for a laptop OR desktop, I highly recommend PC Laptops. Their products are good, their service is good, and their warranty and service after the sale policies are excellent. We'll see if the love affair lasts, but so far I'm impressed. Check 'em out.

what are the specs?

and the true test: did they install vista 64 or 32 bit?

I built my own desktops but laptops are a different story. I too have heard good things about them, but never had any personal experiance with them.

driver support for vista 64 bit is actually quite good. I have yet to find 1 driver that does not work or has a problem. Then again, I mostly use newer hardware 2< years old. I can foresee a problem with home users and thier old junk.

I get to use my full 4gig of memory - ha-ha :D

And if you would have come up to the SLC store, I bet Olly would have humped your leg before you left:p

Oh, I didn't know he worked there. Good to know.

It's 32-bit 'cause I only have 3GB of RAM. I'll have to research the driver situation, and maybe I'll go to 4GB and 64-bit.

It's got the Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz processor, 3GB of RAM, 160GB HD, and all the usual crap (wi-fi, dvd burner, media reader, web cam, mic, the upgraded vid card).

I always build my own desktops, and I usually buy used laptops and upgrade the RAM and HDs. This is the first new laptop I've purchased for myself (had several new corporate laptops).

Hmmm, it sounds like you just bought a Macbook Pro...and if you really paid $3K+ then you got ripped ;) I will say, I've been running that same setup (but 4GB of memory and a real 64-bit system :p) for quite some time and I love it, you will be happy with it.

Update...

I have been very pleased with the laptop I bought a couple weeks ago. I only had one problem, and it was Vista related. I went by today to see if the new unit was available. It is. They said they could probably get it built today if I brought in the old machine. I ran home, and brought it by around noon. They were closing early, and I didn't get a call tonight so I'm guessing it will be done on Wednesday morning.

I gues Olly forwarded this to them, and they said that everyone in the company had seen my "review".

yeah, my MacBook Pro was about $2600. I think I bought it in early November. I'm not a 100% Mac convert, but there are good things about the system. Most of the bad things are familiarity related. When you get down to the nuts and bolts of it, it's still just a computer.

Wow so winblowz is finally catching up with linux in regards to memory management huh? We've been able to use well over 4GB for years... you guys really do get shafted in the windows world.

When will commercial app support for linux catch up with such support for windows 3.1? Use each OS for the right uses.
