Playing in the Snow; Western CO

We have had a decent amount of snow over Christmas break, myself and Karnage Fab (Phillip) decided to head out and play in the fresh powpow! We headed up to Glade Park above Grand Jct and started gaining elevation and deeper snow! Both of us are locked front & rear and on 35's. We stopped where the dirt road started and aired down, I dropped to 10 PSI.... when we stopped it was 12 degrees out! The snow had a layer that was old, then quite a bit of fresh powder on top... made for a good base, for the most part. We pushed pretty hard, found where the plow truck had stopped when it was up there around Thanksgiving. After thinking about it, we pushed past the plowed point and it got soft and deep, fast! We probably went 100 yards down the road and it was over 3' deep.... I was still on the base and the snow was over my 35's! I found a little drift and lost forward momentum. It got a little sketchy, but rocking back & forth got me moving again and we backed out.

Later on we found another road out towards the UT/CO border that was pretty steep and gained elevation pretty quick. Again, we were pushing pretty hard... my Jeep was making it's best progress in 4 Low, 2nd gear and 5,000 RPM! I was keeping an eye on the engine temp gauge, it got warm a couple times but always let it cool back down quickly.

We got stopped again after a hard attempt, backed down the hill and decided to call it a day... no real stucks, no need for a winch or strap and no digging! Good enough to call it a day!

Looks like a lot of fun

It was a great time, yesterdays trip has me thinking about what I could do to make the JKU more snow-travel capable. The 35" AT's are good, but I think a set of 37" MTR Kevlars would float and give better traction pushing in the deep stuff. I still have my stock wheels, too... hmmm! A supercharger would be nice too, for that extra punch of power! :freak:

Exactly why I don't have them. But I'll gladly encourage others to spend all their money. ;)

I'm gonna grab a set of chains for my 35's

I just ran across these, apparently they're cheaper and lighter than Mattracks. I'm going to email them about a price, just for sh!t and giggles! - http://www.americantracktruck.com/index.php?page=about-us-2

I've never ran chains before, airing down has always gotten me where I needed to go. I have a pair of chains that were supposed to fit 35's, but they don't fit. I think I'm going to sell them and pick up 4 chains for 35's, in case I ever get in real trouble in snow or mud.

When we got the 100 Series Land Cruiser stuck this Spring in a deep, wet snow drift I dig it out and aired down to 5 PSI... it was crazy how much traction I had at that point, even with BFG AT's!

Want poofiness!

If you can find a set of "diamond chains" get them, rather than the conventional style chain. They cover the tread of the tire with a criss cross (diamond) link, rather than a belted style link.

Looks awesome! Chains are the cat's meow for snow travel. Tough to get stuck unless you're in some serious deep stuff. That said, I do need to get me some icelandic mojo going on for some winter excursion. How much trimming to run 37's....?

I should be able to fit 37's with minimal issue, they may rub some parts of the flares. I could run different flares for clearance. If I did get 37's they'd have to be a 2nd set of tires. I love how driveable my JK is on 35's and would hate to loose that. I still have my factory wheels, a set of lightly used 37's wouldn't be out of the question!

I've been wondering how chains and airing down to single digits would do, I don't know if that would be beneficial or more trouble than it's worth. I could see chains might move around on a aired down tire?
