Hey, my dad and I have always enjoys cars and working on various vehicles. Well, we have an 84 4Runner and were going to build it up together for Moab, something that we've loved doing together. It was going to be out project. He passed away 4 days ago, Monday morning. This project has taken a new swing for me. It is important to me to finish it, and dedicate it to him. The yota has a fairly rusty frame. Not too deep, but it needs to be taken care of. I'm tight on cash, so renting a sandblaster(something I've done in the past) is not a question at the moment. I'd like to stop or get rid of the rust to preserve the runner as much as possible. I've tried Muratic Acid followed with a wire wheel and die grinder, and it has removed most of it. Anything else I could do? How effective is the Rustoleum rusty metal primer? How well and effective is POR15? Please give advice on what you do to stop, remove, or at least slow as much as possible the rust on a frame. Any thing given is so appreciated. Thanks so much. This board is so great, and such a life saver.

wire wheel is your friend. there is not much more pesides por15 that will keep things from rusting. por15 is a freaky-deek paint that seals off most rust. hit the wire wheel with a quickness and get some paint on it. the problem is that you bought jap sheet metal, that stuff of that vintage is crappy for evading the rust demons. just keep up on the problem areas and enjoy......time for some fun!! :D

Sorry to hear about your dad. My condolances...

I've got a Craftsman sandblaster that I'd let you borrow. The blast tip is a little worn out, but feel free to use it. You'll need to buy the silica sand, but it is very inexpensive. Do you have a solid compressor?

Sorry to hear about your dad man. My sincere condolences, he seamed like a very good man. I don't know how much help I could be with the runner, being all the way down here. But let me know if you need some advice or help, and I'll help as much as possible.

What kind of prep goes into POR15? I've heard it requires another chemical(what I don't know) under it. Thanks for the offer on the sandblaster, we just got rid of our compressor a while ago. I'll try getting around without using a sandblaster on this one. Thanks for the offer. Josh, I like your new signature. I'm glad the runner went to you guys. You'll be seeing the 84 soon. I'm trying to have it ready in a couple months for some wheelin in Moab, and a few other places possibly down south there.

I have been using a product made by POR15 called "Metal Ready" on my metal before putting on the POR15. It makes it so the por15 sticks to the shiny metal, and it oxidizes and coats the rust parts with a zinc phosphate coating (something like that?). Anyways it seems to be working pretty well...

I am also sorry to hear about your father..

i never said that my zuki didn't have "the cancer", zuki sheet metal is only about 1/3 thicker than a beer can:D concerted effort with one's fingernail can cause holes in zuki sheet metal.....:D

My condolences go to you and your family. I have been there. I lost my Dad 5 1/2 years ago. We had work on cars together my entire life. We started my Bronco project when I was 16, followed by his Bronco project. I was a great experience. He died in the middle of my first do it yourself motor project. I built that motor with the help of some good friends and some devine intervention. I truly understand your motivation for your project.

I would like to offer any help or advice I can truck related or personal. Please feel free to call or email me anytime. rckcrlr@networld.com or 814-2645.

As for the rust, wire brush it and use a rust converting primer the from most autobody or parts store. I have had good luck with them. I have heard good things about por15, but have not used it myself. I am thinking about using it this time, before I repaint the Bronco for the 1000th time.

These guys know what the're doing. Use a prep that will work with your top coat wether its a primer or just something to get the metal chemically ready to stick.

I have a little metalurgy background and want to warn you that miriatic acid (aka. Hydrochloric acid) does a great job or taking off rust but it strongly activates the surface. The steel will start rusting like mad after you clean it. Some strong detergent (laundry soap works good) will have enough alkali to neutralize the metal. If you want, put the detergent on thick and don't rinse it off until you want to pait. The alkali will protect the bare steal until you are ready to paint. Just rince it off before you paint.
