Poor 4runner

This is going to be a headache and a half....

Called up insurance to see WTH is going on with this... They are now telling me the 4runner was per-salvaged. When I got the 4runner, first thing I asked, is it a clean title?? I was told it was. I didnt see anywhere on it where it could have been salvaged or anything like that. It was from California, but I still didnt see anything.

They asked if I had the title, I told them I did, and that it was clean (to my knowledge) If it was a salvaged title, wouldnt they have caught that at the DMV, or when I was insuring the vehicle??

I can already tell this is going to be a long drawn out process where I ultimately will probably be screwed with a lot lower offer.

Sorry just had to vent. I can kiss my future rock crawler goodbye I guess...

I just cant catch a break.... Maybe I will just call it quits and drive around some beater car the rest of my life....

Just REALLY frustrated... Not only this mess, but it took the insurance company almost a week to get me the rental I am driving now...

That sucks Colton, don't give up hope. Shit happens, you'll get thru all the BS. Who is your insurance company/agent? Personal question, but did you have a loan of the vehicle? You'd think a bank would have caught a previously salvaged title. I'd call the insurance company out on their BS... know any lawyers?

Yeah, it's surprising that the DMV or the insurance company didn't catch the title issue earlier. Did you to a vin check on the truck before you got it?

What most likely happened is if you take said car that's totaled to say a different state I have heard you can get a clear title if it's rebuilt , Anyway sorry for the headache of dealing with that , good luck man hope you get it straightened out

Lots of times the bank doesn't even ask the question if it is a clean title or not because the loan officer doesn't think/know about it. The dmv doesn't care if it is salvaged or not, they don't think twice about it. They just assume that you know what you're getting. But it really doesn't matter to them cause they'll just send you out a new title. If your title says it is clean that something is fishy about that. If you have a Utah title then it should say rebuilt/restored at the top. Does it not? Rebuilt or rebuilt or salvage titles transfer from every state.

On a positive note though, my cousin totaled her accord a few years ago. She bought it back and did the repairs which cost a lot less than quoted. About a month later she got rear ended and it got totaled again, but worse. A week later she got a check for the same amount as she got the first time. It might not turn out as bad as you think it will.

My insurance company has never even asked if my vehicle is rebuilt or restored or salvage. That leads me to believe that it shouldn't matter to them. Otherwise they should let you know in the beginning of what will be covered, but they've never asked.

FYI, as far as I know, in Utah, once a vehicle is fixed to dmv standards or safety standards, it is no longer a salvage title. It is then a rebuilt/restored title. Sorry for the novel, just trying to give you hope!!

it could be that there was some damage before, repaired but noted on the VIN?

in their eye's, value is lower because ofthat now.

either way, don't settle if you feel uncomfortable. but also don't get greedy.

Thanks guys. I am dealing with Progressive (the girl that hit me's insurance) they are atleast listening at this point. Faxed them over the title that says it is clean, so we will see what happens I guess? :-\

A few years back (I live in Idaho so may be diff for you) I rebuilt a car from an auction. It was a branded title after that. About a month after finishing the car I was rear ended by a drunk driver and they totaled my car again. Progressive called me and offered me what they thought the car was worth without seeing it. I countered with what I thought the car was worth, because it was customized and I had documentation of the build. I had a check for higher than the clean book value of the vehicle in 2 days. They never even mentioned that the car may be worth less due to its repaired title. Then they sold me the car back for salvage value and I fixed it up and made a several thousand more off of it!

Last September, I was rear ended in my wifes car on a Friday night. Progressive called me on Monday morning to schedule a time to see the damage to our car. They came, did an estimate, and wrote us a check on the spot for the repairs. Just to verify before I cashed the check, I had an estimate done at a local shop and they were a couple hundred less for the repairs than Progressive gave me. Progressive also paid to have all 3 of my kids car seats replaced (apparently this is some sort of law with certain types of car seats). They also paid for my phone to be replaced since it went flying under the pedals and scratched the screen pretty bad. All of this, right on the spot at my work, the first business day after the wreck.
Of all the insurance companies I dealt with in my life, Progressive is the fastest and in my experience the most fair to deal with.

Good luck!

I only put liability on the 99 4runner I bought from my brother after his insurance totaled it, because if figured that full coverage would be a waste of money due to it having a totaled title.
I may have to rethink this....

I forgot to update this!

I sent them a fax of the clean title, and they didnt fight it at all. Wrote me a check for a little over $5K with the 4runner buy back. (would have been more if I didnt buy back the runner, but a co worker wanted it)

In the end, tho it was a headache to get the rental car, they treated me very well, and didnt fight the "pre-salvaged" claim.

I am rig hunting now. I got one particular rig in mind, but I dont quite have enough coin.
